Martin Scorsese joins Letterboxd, already has the most followers
Martin Scorsese may be one of the most respected filmmakers today (and for the past 55+ years) but now he has truly reached a crowning achievement. No, we’re not talking about Killers of the Flower Moon but that Martin Scorsese is now the most-followed member of Letterboxd, the social website for movie lovers.
Oscar-winning director Martin Scorsese joined Letterboxd just last week but has already jumped to the top of the list of most-followed members. As of publication, Scorsese has more than 260,000 followers.
Martin Scorsese even started off his Letterboxd venture with a list of “companion films” to his expansive filmography, writing, “I love the idea of putting different films together into one program. I grew up seeing double features, programs in repertory houses, evenings of avant-garde films in storefront theatres. You always learn something, see something in a new light, because every movie is in conversation with every other movie. The greater the difference between the pictures, the better. Over the years, I’ve been asked to pair my own pictures with older films by other people that have inspired them. The request has come from film festivals, which present the pairings as a program. The terms “inspiration” and “influence” aren’t completely accurate. I think of them as companion films. Sometimes the relationship is based on inspiration. Sometimes it’s the relationships between the characters. Sometimes it’s the spirit of the picture. Sometimes it’s far more mysterious than that.”
Outside of Letterboxd, Martin Scorsese is certainly no stranger to social media, as he has an Instagram account (see above) and his daughter Francesca has tried her best to make him a TikTok sensation. And while it is certainly entertaining to watch him decipher the slang of Gen Z, Marty might best be suited for more cinema-centric fare.
For what it’s worth, Martin Scorsese’s top rated films on Letterboxd are Goodfellas, The Departed, Killers of the Flower Moon, Raging Bull, and The King of Comedy.
While we do still await more lists and an official top four from Martin Scorsese, we did notice that he “liked” a small selection of films: Elia Kazan’s Wild River, William Wyler’s The Heiress, Robert Wise’s Blood on the Moon, and Howard Hawks’ Red River. What, no Marvel?!
