Superman Legacy: James Gunn confirms the film is on schedule for a July 2025 release
With the SAG-AFTRA and WGA strikes finally over, Hollywood is returning to work. One of the big tentpole movies due to go into production sooner rather than later is James Gunn’s reboot Superman: Legacy. The first film to be set in Gunn’s new version of the DCU, just before the strike ended, it was announced that David Corenswet and Rachel Brosnahan were officially cast as Superman and Lois Lane. Additionally, Nathan Fillion was confirmed to be in the movie as Green Lantern Guy Gardner. Other casting on the film has been scarce thanks to the strike, but now Gunn is ensuring that, despite the strikes, the movie is still on track for a 2024 shoot and its July 11, 2025 release date.
He confirmed this on X:
Thanks to the efforts of our talented crew, who never lost faith during the longest strikes in Hollywood history, and who never let their foot off the pedal, continuing to barrel forward, creating the most amazing character and set designs I’ve seen in my entire career,… pic.twitter.com/ntnEbA2fC0

To note, Superman: Legacy comes at a critical time, not only for the DCU but also for superhero films. Many believe the genre is in a slump, with The Marvels posting a disastrous box office result this weekend. That, coupled with the staggering financial failure of The Flash, has people wondering if the genre is going the way of the dodo. To note, Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3 grossed a mighty $800 million plus at the box office this summer, so maybe reports of the genre’s death are premature.
In January, Gunn officially took over DC Studios (with Peter Safran), and Superman: Legacy is being viewed as the movie that will kick off a new era for DC. If it fails, Gunn’s plans for DC could fall apart. That said, Gunn’s track record is second to none, so there’s reason to be optimistic about his new take on the Superman mythology.
Do you think Superman: Legacy will live up to the hype, or do you believe ditching Henry Cavill was a mistake DC will never live down? Let us know in the comments.
