Thor 5: Taika Waititi says he won’t be involved in making the God of Thunder’s next sequel
When credits for Thor: Love and Thunder ended, Marvel Studios promised the God of Thunder would return to the MCU for another adventure of epic proportions. While the studio’s been quiet about Thor’s return, that hasn’t kept fans from speculating about the hero’s future and press outlets from needling Taika Waititi about returning to direct another film in the franchise after helming the last two chapters, Thor: Ragnarok and Thor: Love and Thunder. Catching up with Waititi while promoting his new sports drama Next Goal Wins, Business Insider asked if he’s involved with Thor 5.
“I wouldn’t know if that’s accurate,” Waititi explained to Business Insider. “I know that I won’t be involved.” Before putting a pin in the conversation, Waititi added, “I’m going to concentrate on these other films that I’ve signed on for.”
Waititi has several projects in development, including an adaptation of Alejandro Jodorowsky’s graphic novel The Incal and toiling away on his mysterious Star Wars feature. Waititi says the Star Wars movie remains a high priority and that he’s still in the process of writing the highly-anticipated project set in a galaxy far, far away. Meanwhile, his next endeavor is for Klara and the Sun, an adaptation of Kazuo Ishiguro’s novel.
In Ishiguro’s story, Klara is an Artificial Friend in a store with outstanding observational qualities, watching the behavior of those who come in to browse carefully, especially those who pass in the street outside. She remains hopeful a customer will soon choose her. Still, when the possibility emerges that her circumstances may change forever, Klara is warned not to invest too much in the promises of humans.
Waititi says his forthcoming projects will take at least six or seven years to complete and that Marvel likely wants another Thor movie sooner rather than later. “But I love Marvel, I love working with them. I love Chris,” Waititi says about collaborating with the superhero studio and Thor actor Chris Hemsworth.
When asked if it would be weird for Marvel to move on to another director for Thor 5, Waititi appears to embrace polyamory. “I would never feel like they are cheating on me,” Waititi said with coy laughter. “We’re in an open relationship, and it’s like if they want to see other people, I’m happy for that. I’d still get back into bed with them one day.”
Who would be your top choice to direct Thor 5? I’d like to see Michael Rianda and Jeff Rowe of The Mitchells vs the Machines fame take a crack at the God of Thunder’s next odyssey. Let us know in the comments section below!
