Old Dads (2023)

Dir Bill Burr

Bill Burr, Bobby Cannavale, Bokeeem Woodbine, Rachael Harris, Katie Aselton, Jackie Tohn, Reign Edwards, Miles Robbins, C Thomas Howell, Bruce Dern.

Burr plays Jack, a 51 year old dad to 5 year old Nate. His wife, Leah is pregnant with their second baby. He has long struggled with his anger, and those around him just chalk it up to that’s who he is.

Recently he and his pals had to sell their  business to a conglomerate in order to help pay for kids kids private school. When he takes his anger out on the school principal, this begins a downturn in the relationships around him.

While there is nothing really outwardly original with the concept of the story, the script is fairly amusing, but you would have to be a fan of Burr to appreciate his script.

There is some forced emotional elements that are done admirably. Being over 40 myself and a father, I could relate to Jack I some ways.

There are some downs; the run time is 104m, and it feels like it could have done with some extra editing. Some arcs feel unnecessary, and should have been left out entirely (despite how amazing the actor who plays the role is).

Fine for a cold night in, and for a few laughs. It even tugs at the heartstrings a little too.
