Rebel Moon – Part One: Read our first reaction!

With the debut of Zack Snyder’s Rebel Moon — or, at least the first part, subtitled A Child of Fire — just one day away, our own editor-in-chief Chris Bumbray made the journey to the debut in Los Angeles. And yes, Snyder has stuck the landing.

Upon first reaction, he wrote that Rebel Moon “owes a lot to Star Wars and a ton to The Magnificent Seven, but it’s also way more entertaining than anything Lucasfilm has put out in awhile.” In a separate tweet, he wrote, “Very old-school Star Wars. Felt like a movie that could have been made in 1980, but in a good way.” He also noted that Netflix may have made an error in their release approach. “Netflix could have made a mint with this in theaters given how weak a line up of tentpoles we have in theaters this Christmas.” You can expect more thoughts from JoBlo.com on Friday.

Hype can be a tightrope walk, but this is no doubt good news coming out of the Rebel Moon premiere, especially to those who were skeptical of the project.

Rebel Moon is a Seven Samurai—inspired space epic about a distant galactic colony that comes under threat from the armies of a tyrannical regent named Balisarius. Desperate to survive, they send a young woman (Sofia Boutella) on a mission to find allies that may be able to turn the tide. The film stars a murderer’s row of talent alongside Boutella, including Charlie Hunnam, Djimon Hounsou, Ed Skrein, Michael Huisman, Doona Bae, Ray Fisher, Cary Elwes, Alfonso Herrera, Jena Malone, and Sir Anthony Hopkins as (of course) the voice of sentient battle robot Jimmy.” The movie has made the Oscar shortlist for Best Visual Effects.

Not surprisingly considering his history of director’s cuts, Rebel Moon – Part One: A Child of Fire will have its own extended version that will run around an hour longer, something Snyder compared to “a revelation.” The cut that will be arriving first is 134 minutes.

While the first part of Rebel Moon, A Child of Fire, has a limited run from December 15th – 21st, it will hit Netflix on that final day. The second part, The Scargiver, is slated for April 19th.

Are you looking forward to Zack Snyder’s Rebel Moon? Will you catch it during its limited run or wait until it hits Netflix?
