10 Movies That Deserved a Sequel
1- Mr Brooks
The Kevin Costner/William Hurt thriller from 2007 was dark and edgy, (and is on my rewatch/review list). It was reportedly going to be part of a trilogy at one point. Sadly since Hurt’s passing in 2022 this will likely never come to be.
2 – US Marshalls
The ‘standalone sequel’ to 1993’s The Fugitive saw the main protagonist that of Tommy Lee Jones’ Sam Gerard. This time with new partner Robert Downey Jr, they chased Wesley Snipes. The banter between his team was strong in The Fugitive, and their movie was almost as good as its ‘predecessor’. It would have been great to see them back for one more caper. Having been over 25 years since the release, I doubt we’ll see it.
3- Super
While the Rainn Wilson/James Gunn film ended with Frank not really needing to be The Crimson Bolt’ any more, it would have been fun to see him don the costume once again, and maybe find a ‘Boltie II’
4 – Brightburn
It has only recently been revealed by James Gunn that there are no immediate plans for a sequel – but it would amazing to see what the last 5 years have done to Brandon and to see where he is – and who if anyone can bring him down. This also exists in the same ‘universe’ as the beforementioned film Super – so a Brightburn/Super sequel could co-exist.
5- Kill Bill
Realistically and logistically this would probably be a bad idea if QT ever gave it to us. What the KB duel movie gave us was a solid narrative idea with The Bride going after 5 people. KB3 would just be Nikki and potentially Elle and Sophie against Beatrix. It probably was not a strong enough foundation for a film.
6 – Logan Lucky
This would be more of a spinoff idea more than anything, and that would be revolving around Hilary Swank’s Sarah Grayson. She had such a limited time on screen in the film, I would love to see a film based on her.
7- Long Kiss Goodnight
One of the absolute best action films of the 1990s, with a great cast, and even better screenplay (written by the king of the buddy trope Shane Black). Surely Charlie would have antagonised more than just her former employer as an assassin. An original sequel was hinted years ago, but never happened.
8- Nice Guys
Another Shane Black movie, this time which he directed and starred Russell Crowe and Ryan Gosling. They had such great chemistry together I wish this did better theatrically that it might have been profitatable. Both Crowe and Gosling are still quite popular, this could happen, but it still seems unlikely.
9 – “Speed”
Yes, Speed 2 exists, but it was such a clusterfuck of a movie – no one really wants to remember it.
Both Bullock and Reeves are still very active in their film making, and still young enough that ‘Speed 3’ could and should salvage what was such an abysmal first sequel.
10 – 2 Guns
This 2013 ‘buddy trope’ film looks like it flew under the radar a little, despite the impressive cast. Denzel Washington and Mark Wahlberg had amazing banter together, and they have both kept popular enough that this could happen.
