DISTANT LANDS Official Teaser Trailer
LOVE, DEATH + ROBOTS | Official Trailer

Blade: Trinity

Plot

A group of vampires have unleased Dracula, at the same time Blade has been ‘unmasked’ to the world – and landed on the radar of FBI. A group of vampire hunters called the Nightstalkers rescue Blade following his capture, and the death of Whistler – and ask him to join their team – to stop the group from destroying mankind, and at the same time – bring Dracula down once and for all.

Direction

Only okay direction from new to the franchise David S Goyer (who also wrote the script). There seems to be style over substance – with some silly “character slow/background superspeed” moments that are done poorly.

Some of the action is a little too chaotic, and super close ups take away from what should have been well choreographed moments.

While the previous films also had an over reliance on CGI, this does too – however not as aggressively as the predecessors.

Cast/Characters

Wesley Snipes and Kris Kristofferson are back, with the latter having minimum screen-time yet still getting second billing (likely due to the fact he is one of two cast members from all three movies).

New cast members are Jessica Biel and Ryan Reynolds as the leaders of the Nightstalkers, Abigail Whistler (his daughter) and Hannibal King. Other members of the team are cast members Natasha Lyonne and Patton Oswalt.

The main villains are Parker Posey as Danica and Dominic Purcel as Dracula.

Screenplay/Setting/Themes

Fairly ordinary to be quite frank. There are a few moments where it is obvious that the Goyer was trying to be profound in what he was writing, but it just comes across clucky and it was almost as if the cast member was cringing as they were saying it.

There are some fun moments however, mostly from Reynolds Hannibal. Whether or not this was Reynolds being himself or they just knew how to write for him way back then.

The vampires this time around are the least threatening, and most forgettable – and Dracula (or Drake) is… despite the ‘lore’ characters other characters speak about –depicted poorly and is the least deadly of all the main antagonists in all three films.

Overall

A pretty poor film, and considering the drama that went on while filming (almost everyone who worked on the film hated working with one person who starred in the film). Thankfully Snipes would go on to redeem the character in 2024’s Deadpool and Wolverine.

1.5/5
