Emma Stone and Yorgos Lanthimos reunite for an upcoming Super Bowl ad for Squarespace
The partnership of Emma Stone and Yorgos Lanthimos
For filmmaker and actor pairs, when it works, it just works. Why stray from the formula? Tim Burton and Johnny Depp have made a successful pairing in the past. Martin Scorsese and Robert De Niro are about as iconic a duo as Martin Scorsese and Leonardo DiCaprio. And Yorgos Lanthimos has definitely found his muse in Emma Stone. The two have worked together on The Favourite, Poor Things, Kinds of Kindness, and most recently, Bugonia. Stone would be Oscar-nominated for her performances in The Favourite, Poor Things and Bugonia. So far, she would come away with a victory on Poor Things, but we will see if she can pull out another win at the Academy Awards this March. It actually won’t be long til you see them working together again.
Upcoming Super Bowl Ad
The Hollywood Reporter is previewing an upcoming ad for the Super Bowl this year. Squarespace will have a short film-esque commercial that stars Emma Stone and is directed by Yorgos Lanthimos. This is the first big game ad for the actor/director duo and is the 12th entry of a Super Bowl commercial for Squarespace. It is slated to air during the second half of Super Bowl LX. The ad is titled Unavailable and will be 30 seconds long, but the company has released a 15-second teaser with Stone displaying a film noir-ish performance. Additionally, Lanthimos also directs a spot for Grubhub for this year’s game. You can check out the teaser for Unavailable below.
Per THR, “Unavailable‘s set was built by production designer James Price (Poor Things, Bugonia, The Iron Claw), and the music is the work of Lanthimos’ team and composer Jerskin Fendrix. The campaign was shot in London on black and white film.”
Bugonia
Meanwhile, if you want to check out the duo’s latest feature film effort, Bugonia is available to stream on Peacock. I, personally, enjoyed it in all its off-kilterness, but our Chris Bumbray found it to be a lot more divisive. He says in his review, “In the end, I respect Bugonia for its craft and the total commitment of its performances. But I can’t say it was an easy film to sit through — which, to be fair, isn’t unusual with Lanthimos’s work. Still, when the credits rolled, I wasn’t sure this one was worth the effort.”
