LOVE, DEATH + ROBOTS | Official Trailer

Disney’s Pirates of the Caribbean reboot starring Margot Robbie could feature Jack Sparrow’s son and more

Why is the rum gone? I could really use some right now. Why? There’s just so much going on in Hollywood right now, making it challenging to keep up with where specific projects are at. Take Disney‘s Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, for example. It’s been ages since we heard anything about Disney’s Pirates remake starring Margot Robbie, and the likelihood of Johnny Depp returning to the role of Jack Sparrow is forever in question. Is Robbie’s Pirates project still happening? Is another Pirates movie what Depp needs to polish his star after his very public feud with his ex-wife Amber Heard? Luckily, industry insider Jeff Sneider has a few ideas.

Calm seas ahead for Disney after D’Amaro’s appointment

According to Sneider, Disney is returning to its Pirates franchise after taking time to evaluate its future. Recently, Disney named its Parks, Experiences, and Products chief, Josh D’Amaro, as the studio’s new CEO. With D’Amaro’s appointment in the bag, Disney can focus on the future, no longer needing to hem and haw over who will run the show. Of course, D’Amaro has his work cut out for him, with the company’s future at stake, and massive decisions to make concerning Disney’s time-honored properties, such as Pirates of the Caribbean. With Dana Walden’s help, D’Amaro needs to chart a course for success for the Pirates franchise, and Jeff Sneider appears to know a thing or two about where the compass points.

Is Disney’s Pirates reboot still happening?

According to Sneider, rebooting Pirates of the Caribbean is a priority for Disney. To begin, Sneider says that Krysty Wilson-Cairns, who co-wrote 1917 with Sam Mendes, is in talks to pen a Pirates reboot that would feature Jack Sparrow’s son, with Margot Robbie possibly leading the charge. Sneider points out that, at the end of Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, Penelope Cruz’s Angelica attempts to tell Jack that she’s pregnant with his child. Could this be revisited for the forthcoming reboot?

Jack Sparrow has a son?!

While many thought the Pirates franchise was dead, a script from Jeff Nathanson revived interest in the reboot in 2023. Michael Bay wanted to direct the reboot, but Disney wants someone else at the helm. For a time, Disney was developing a Pirates spinoff starring Robbie. Still, that project is reportedly morphing into this new idea, with Jack Sparrow’s son and Robbie’s unnamed character joining forces to reinvigorate the franchise.

Ultimately, Disney wants Robbie to lead the reboot as an original, iconic character, with her being a punk-rock cross between Jack Sparrow and Emma Stone’s Cruella de Vil. While retooling the franchise, Disney wants the reboot to set sail on a more modest budget while still carrying the same tone as the original film and its sequels. To put things into perspective, 2017’s Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales cost the studio a reported $230 million to produce. The new film would aim for $150-$180 million. However, that amount depends on many factors.

Will the new Pirates movie feature Johnny Depp as Jack Sparrow? It’s difficult to say. If the studio wants to keep the budget down, Disney could rule out Depp’s participation.

A pirate’s life for me

I’m in the middle of watching Netflix’s live-action adaptation of One Piece, so I’m definitely in the mood for more pirate action. I love the thought of Robbie leading the reboot, but I am less enthused about Jack Sparrow’s son tagging along for the wild ride. I understand why Disney thinks they need the “Jack Sparrow connection” to put asses in seats, but I believe rebooting the franchise with fresh faces is a more interesting way to go. That’s just my preference, though. Plenty of people would be excited to see Depp’s Sparrow return for another swashbuckling adventure, so we’ll need to wait and see how things turn out.
