Box Office Update: Wuthering Heights Will Easily Take The Top Spot
As expected, Emerald Fennell’s much anticipated adaptation of Emily Brontë’s Wuthering Heights is looking at an easy first place finish for the Valentine’s Day / Presidents’ Day weekend. Deadline is estimating a $40 million four-day finish, which is pretty much exactly what we predicted earlier this week.
Overseas, the film will likely bring in another $40 million, doubling its haul to $80 million — which is a great start for a period piece.
However, one concerning factor is that the movie only has a B CinemaScore rating, which is pretty much in line with the critical reaction, with some loving it and others hating it (although I was somewhere in-between).
How Wuthering Heights Compares to Barbie and Other Prestige Releases
While it’s not going to be the absolute phenomenon Margot Robbie’s Barbie was, an opening in this range is still something all involved should be proud of, with the rumored $80 million production likely to make a solid chunk of change in theaters.
That’s a lot better than the vast majority of Oscar-bait style titles opened with in last year’s fourth quarter, making it seem like WB was smart to open this movie in Q1, which is typically not when studios opt to debut prestige movies.
Perhaps this thinking needs to be overhauled, as another prestige title, Sinners (also from WB), opened in Q2 last year and still dominated the Oscars.
Sony’s GOAT Lands in Second Place
Sony’s GOAT is looking at a softer-than-expected second place landing, with it on track for about $25 million, which is low for an animated movie.
However, families have been underserved in recent months at the box office, so it’s possible GOAT will have major legs and crank out some serious cash for weeks and weeks.
Crime 101 Opens in Third Place
Amazon/MGM’s Crime 101 is looking at a third place finish with about $13.8 million for the holiday weekend.
That’s not a great number for a movie that cost at least $90 million, but star Chris Hemsworth’s box office run outside of the MCU has been hit or miss. His last crime thriller, Blackhat (from the great Michael Mann), only made $4 million its opening weekend.
Crime 101 is performing much better (the reviews are mostly positive), and even if it loses money in theaters, it should recoup once it hits Amazon Prime Video in a few months.
We’ll be back tomorrow with a full box office wrap-up!
