Box Office Update: Wuthering Heights fails to crack $40 million over the holiday weekend
Wuthering Heights Falls Short of Expectations
Going into the holiday weekend (today is President’s Day), everyone in Hollywood assumed that Wuthering Heights, starring Margot Robbie and Jacob Elordi, would easily take the top spot, with many predicting its Valentine’s Day release would propel it to an opening north of $50 million. Eventually, the figure was revised to $40 million (which we predicted all along), but according to ComScore’s latest figures, the period epic fell short of that mark, having made only $38 million over the four-day weekend. While that’s still a solid number for a costume drama with an $80 million budget, the fact is that Warner Bros. spent upwards of $85 million promoting it, so in order to break even at the box office it will have to show some serious legs. However, one must give WB some credit, with this being their ninth movie in a row to open at number one at the box office. With numbers like that, you can see why exhibitors are hoping their deal with Netflix doesn’t go through.
GOAT Nearly Pulls Off an Upset
One aspect no one saw coming was that Sony’s animated movie, GOAT, would come so close to dethroning it. Sunday and Monday matinees pushed its total to an anticipated $35 million, which is just $3 million shy of what Wuthering Heights made. Given next weekend’s lack of competition, many believe GOAT will easily take the top spot, as Wuthering Heights only has a so-so B CinemaScore rating, which suggests mixed word-of-mouth.
Crime 101 Holds Steady While Send Help Surges
Meanwhile, the epic Crime 101, starring Chris Hemsworth, did about what folks predicted it would, making $16.3 million over the holiday. However, the real news is how Sam Raimi’s Send Help performed. Yesterday, in my box office report, I mentioned that it had dipped only 1% week to week. With the holiday box office factored in, it actually increased its business by 15% in its third weekend, with the $10.4 million gross adding to its $49 million haul. The mid-budget thriller has proven to be a major success for 20th Century Studios, once again showing that a movie doesn’t have to be tentpole-sized to pull in a crowd (Sony was originally going to make Send Help as a streaming movie).
