Robert Duvall, Legendary Character Actor, Dead at 95
Robert Duvall, one of Hollywood’s greatest character actors of all time, has passed away. According to Deadline, the 95-year-old actor died last night at his home in Middleburg, Virginia. The actor hadn’t appeared on screen since making two movies back-to-back for Netflix in 2022: the Adam Sandler drama Hustle and the Scott Cooper period epic The Pale Blue Eye.
A Giant Among Character Actors
Where does one begin when paying tribute to an icon of his stature? Like his contemporary Gene Hackman, Robert Duvall was one of those actors with endless credits, being Hollywood’s go-to for character roles, as he was just so damn good every single time he was on screen. Famous for never giving a performance that was anything less than excellent, Duvall arguably became even more in demand the older he got, constantly appearing opposite Hollywood’s top leading men, many of whom relished going toe-to-toe with him.
From the Sixties to The Godfather
Duvall’s career began in the fifties on stage before an early film role as Boo Radley in 1962’s To Kill a Mockingbird. After that, he showed up on many TV series of the era, as well as playing roles in classics like Bullitt, MASH*, and the John Wayne movie True Grit. He moved into lead roles, starring in George Lucas’s THX 1138, before hitting the big time with his iconic performance in The Godfather as consigliere Tom Hagen, reprising the role for the sequel (but not the third film).
Rather than trying to make it as a traditional leading man, Duvall seemed content to embrace character roles, which arguably was the secret to his success. He went on to act in a nonstop series of classics including Apocalypse Now (where he delivered the famous line, “I love the smell of napalm in the morning”), Network, Colors, Falling Down, two movies with Tom Cruise (Days of Thunder and Jack Reacher), The Judge, and so many more.
Oscar Winner and Accomplished Director
While primarily known as a character actor, Duvall also won an Oscar for playing the lead in the terrific country music drama Tender Mercies, and memorably portrayed Augustus “Gus” McCrae in the classic miniseries Lonesome Dove. He was also an accomplished director, having helmed The Apostle, Assassination Tango, Wild Horses, and several others.
He remained in demand in recent years, working with everyone from Robert Downey Jr. (whom he starred opposite in The Judge) to Scott Cooper (Crazy Heart and The Pale Blue Eye) and Steve McQueen, who memorably cast him in Widows.
One of a Kind
Truly, he was one of a kind and will be deeply missed. What’s your favorite Robert Duvall movie? Let us know in the comments.
