Beast trailer: Russell Crowe goes MMA in sports drama

Lionsgate has released the first teaser trailer for Beast, a sports drama starring Russell Crowe (Gladiator) and Daniel MacPherson (Land of Bad). Blood will spill and bones will crunch in the film, which follows a former MMA champion who reunites with his trainer for one final showdown.

Who, What, When

In addition to starring in Beast, Crowe also co-wrote the script with David Frigerio (Muzzle). The film is directed by Tyler Atkins (Ocean Boy). The rest of the cast is rounded out by Luke Hemsworth (Westworld), Bren Foster (The Last Ship), Amy Shark (Love, Simon), Mojean Aria (The Enforcer), Kelly Gale (Plane).

The official synopsis reads: “After years away from the cage, a once-feared MMA champion is pulled back in for the fight of his life when his younger brother is put in danger. Reuniting with the trainer who once made him a legend, he commits to one final showdown against the reigning title-holder — a brutal fighter determined to dismantle the ex-champ’s legacy in front of the world. Pushed to his breaking point, the contender’s stakes are simple: win, or lose everything he’s built.“

Beast will hit theaters on April 10.

MacPherson on Beast

While speaking with People, MacPherson says Beast is a “true underdog story that’s full of heart and purpose. It’s both a family story of redemption and sacrifice as well as a high-level action film. It’s one for both MMA fans and film lovers alike.“

MacPherson has worked with Crowe before on Poker Face and Land of Bad. “Russell Crowe is a master, and I’m fortunate that this was our third film together,” he said. “He elevates every project he works on, and Beast was no different. He brings a lifetime of cinema experience to every day on set and I still learn so much working with him.“

Crowe’s Last Project

Crowe was recently seen starring alongside Ethan Hawke in The Weight, a historical drama which premiered at Sundance last month. The Weight is an immersive ride from beginning to end,” said our own Chris Bumbray in his review, “and it would be a crime if it doesn’t get a theatrical release, as this is large-canvas filmmaking that absolutely kills in a theater. Imagine Train Dreams if it were an action movie, and you’ll have a pretty good idea of what The Weight is like.“
