Ed Skrein to Play the Unfeeling Son of Odin, Baldur, Opposite Ryan Hurst’s Kratos in Prime Video’s God of War Series
After announcing a God of War trilogy remake and releasing the God of War: Sons of Sparta spinoff game, the money-printing property revolving around the epic adventures of Kratos is going full steam ahead on its live-action adaptation with another significant casting announcement. Today, Sony Pictures Television and Amazon MGM Studios shared that Ed Skrein (Deadpool, Rebel Moon – Part One: A Child of Fire, Jurassic World: Rebirth) will star opposite Ryan Hurst (Kratos) as Baldur, the unforgiving son of Odin, in Prime Video‘s God of War series.
Who is Baldur?
“Baldur may be the youngest son of Odin, but he’s his father’s most dangerous weapon,” says Prime Video’s official description for Baldur. “Charismatic, unpredictable and armed with a razor-sharp tongue, Baldur lives by his own rules. As a boy, Baldur was cursed; this curse denied him the ability to feel pleasure and physical sensation. This fuels an insatiable anger and bloodlust in Baldur, who favors a brawling fighting style that blends his immense power with the raw impact of his fists. Above all else, he longs for an opponent that can truly match his prowess in battle. An opponent that can finally make him feel something.”
What is God of War About?
Based on PlayStation’s massively popular ancient mythology-themed video game, the series has received a two-season order, with pre-production underway in Vancouver. God of War follows father and son Kratos and Atreus as they embark on a journey to spread the ashes of their wife and mother, Faye. Through their adventures, Kratos tries to teach his son to be a better god, while Atreus tries to teach his father how to be a better human.
Baldur Steps Onto the Scene
Anyone who’s played the 2018 relaunch of God of War remembers their first encounter with Baldur, played by Jeremy Davies, star of Twister and The Black Phone. Baldur helps kick the game off with a knock-down, drag-out fight against Kratos, giving players a great sense of the game’s combat mechanics and dramatic character interactions. Baldur is a formidable foe throughout most of the game, as Kratos struggles to move beyond his past mistakes and crimes against the gods.
Who Else Stars in God of War?
Previously announced cast members include Ryan Hurst as Kratos, Callum Vinson as Atreus, Max Parker as Heimdall, Ólafur Darri Ólafsson as Thor, Teresa Palmer as Sif, Alastair Duncan as Mimir, Jeff Gulka as Sindri, Danny Woodburn as Brok, and Mandy Patinkin as Odin. Emmy Award-winning director Frederick E.O. Toye (Shōgun, The Boys, Fallout) has signed on to direct the first two episodes of God of War.
I don’t know about you, but my body is ready for Prime Video’s God of War series. I’m a massive fan of the video game franchise, and can’t wait to see what this live-action adaptation has in store. A part of me wonders whether the show’s creators can recapture the game franchise’s exciting action and drama, but I’d like to see them try, for better or worse. The cast is truly impressive thus far, so my fingers are officially crossed.
