If WB wasn’t clear in its marketing push for the upcoming film, Urban’s Johnny Cage is the star of the show for the tournament to come, with Simon McQuoid looking to course-correct the franchise after the mixed reception to the 2021 reboot.

In today’s Mortal Kombat II trailer, Johnny Cage’s star is fading, as the wisecracking action star can’t even get people to buy an autograph at a local Comic-Con-like event. As he’s ready to throw in the towel, Lord Raiden (Tadanobu Asano) and Sonya Blade (Jessica McNamee) arrive to enter the next Mortal Kombat tournament. At first, Johnny is like, WTF? However, as he explores the mysterious realm of Outworld, he rediscovers his warrior roots and joins the fight for survival alongside a group of chosen combatants. The trailer begins with a self-serious tone before evolving into what Mortal Kombat fans know and want from the series, a hyper-violent, tongue-in-cheek display of blood, sweat, and startling feats of strength and personality. The trailer features plenty of surprises, classic Mortal Kombat moves, and teases of character deaths and resurrections.

That said, Mortal Kombat has underwhelmed audiences before. I want nothing more than for Mortal Kombat II to get things right, giving fans a reason to celebrate instead of grousing on the internet, even though that’ll happen anyway.
