Matt Dillon will be headlining the TV series remake of The Magnificent Seven

Magnificent Seven for a new age

The Magnificent Seven is a cinematic classic that was given a remake treatment not too long ago when Antoine Fuqua helmed an updated version in 2016 with an all-star cast, which included Denzel Washington, Chris Pratt, Ethan Hawke, Vincent D’Onofrio, Lee Byung-hun, Manuel Garcia-Rulfo, and Martin Sensmeier, among others. It was recently reported that MGM+ is also developing a new incarnation in the form of an eight-episode limited series from Tim Kring.

“Tim Kring is a master storyteller,” said Michael Wright, head of MGM+. “Tim, Donald De Line, Larry Mirisch, and Bruce Kaufman have crafted a series that delivers the energy of a classic western, honors the legacy of the original film, and reasserts its timeless themes of the power of unity against oppression and flawed heroes finding redemption by helping those who can’t help themselves.”

Matt Dillon leads the project

MGM+ has just announced that Matt Dillon, whose credits span from The Outsiders to Crash to There’s Something About Mary, will be leading the new show, which is planning to start production in June of 2026 in Calgary. Michael Wright of MGM+ has also spoken about Dillon’s attachment to the project, “Matt Dillon brings extraordinary depth and gravitas to this iconic role. His ability to portray complex, morally conflicted characters makes him the perfect choice to lead our reimagining of The Magnificent Seven. This series honors the legacy of the original film while exploring timeless themes about courage, redemption, and standing up against oppression—and Matt’s performance will be at the heart of that story.”

Dillon can also be seen playing the father of Sylvester Stallone, Frank Stallone Sr., in the upcoming film, I Play Rocky, which is about the making of Rocky, from Peter Farrelly.

Details on the series

The series description reads,
“Set in the tumultuous 1880s American frontier, The Magnificent Seven follows seven gifted but flawed mercenaries hired to protect a peaceful Quaker village after it is massacred by mercenaries working for a ruthless land baron trying to seize their land. As the team embeds itself and prepares to defend against overwhelming odds, they grapple with a central question: is violence acceptable to defend people whose faith is based on non-violence? The series explores the backstories of each of the Seven, what’s at stake for them, and why they choose this mission—delving into themes of honor, sacrifice, redemption, morality, and faith. The series will be available on MGM+ in the United States, United Kingdom, Belgium, the Netherlands, Italy, Spain, Germany, Brazil, Mexico, Colombia, and Chile.”

The show is written and executive produced by Tim Kring (HeroesTouchDigCrossing Jordan), alongside executive producers Donald De Line (Billy the KidWayward Pines), Lawrence Mirisch, Bruce Kaufman and Matt Dillon. Casting by Seth Yanklewitz. MGM+ Studios and MGM Television Studios are producing.
