Why Spider-Man: Beyond The Spider-Verse has been delayed again and again
After the release of Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, Sony began development on a sequel, which was later split into two parts. Initially, the plan was to release Across the Spider-Verse in the summer of 2023, with Beyond the Spider-Verse following closely behind in the spring of 2024. Although the first sequel was released in 2023 to great acclaim, we’re still waiting on Beyond the Spider-Verse, which has been delayed again and again. So, what’s been the holdup?
Beyond the Spider-Verse Delay
While speaking with io9, Spider-Verse franchise writers/producers Phil Lord and Christopher Miller revealed that the delay began when they realized that the trilogy’s conclusion simply didn’t have enough story to justify an entire movie.
“At one point it was one movie, but there was too much movie there, so it was separated into two,” Miller explained. “But then once you looked at that second half of a movie, you’re like, ‘Well, that’s like not just a story arc that has a beginning, middle, and end.“
Lord added, “We know where it’s headed, but we need to understand better what’s happening in the middle. And we came upon a really wonderful notion, which is when your family is broken apart by your calling, your talents, how do you put them back together? How do you have it all?“
“Having to take it apart to put it back together again was really, really [the] real thing that made it take longer,” Miller said.
They’re Feeling the Pressure
The previous two films have been among the most acclaimed animated movies ever released, which means the pressure is very real for the third installment to stick the landing. And that’s a weight Lord and Miller know they’re carrying. “We put the most pressure on ourselves,” Miller said. “There’s no one that puts more pressure on us than ourselves, wanting to outdo ourselves each time and see things that you haven’t seen before and make it feel like something you’ve never experienced before. And so, trying to get something that is as worthy as the previous two has been the driver.“
Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse is set to hit theaters on June 18, 2027.
