Sonic the Hedgehog 4 starts production with director Jeff Fowler wielding Amy Rose’s hammer
Sonic the Hedgehog 4 has officially started production, with returning director Jeff Fowler taking to social media to announce the big moment. The photo features him holding Amy Rose’s iconic hammer while standing in a grassy field surrounded by a giant blue screen. I continue to be surprised by just how successful this franchise has been, with the three films grossing over $1.2 billion. Not bad at all.

Speaking of Amy Rose…
Amy Rose is a pink hedgehog who wields the Piko Piko Hammer and has a crush on Sonic. She first appeared in the post-credit scene in Sonic the Hedgehog 3, and it was recently announced that Kristen Bell (Nobody Wants This) would voice the character.
Bell joins a franchise voice cast which includes Ben Schwartz (Parks and Recreation) as Sonic, Idris Elba (Thor: Ragnarok) as Knuckles, Colleen O’Shaughnessey (Danny Phantom) as Tails, and Keanu Reeves (John Wick) as Shadow.
The live-action actors in the franchise are James Marsden (Avengers: Doomsday) and Tika Sumpter (Watson), who play Sonic’s adopted family’s parental figures, as well as Lee Majdoub (Upload) as Agent Stone and Jim Carrey (Dumb and Dumber) as the (mostly) villainous Dr. Robotnik. Most are expected to return to reprise their parts, but it’s not clear who might be sitting this one out.
Jim Carrey Could Return
Carrey hasn’t been too active on the big screen over the last decade, having only appeared in the three Sonic movies during that time. He does seem to be having fun with it (or his clone is), and has even expressed a willingness to return for Sonic the Hedgehog 4 if they have a good reason to do it. “I’m definitely open. I’m open to the idea, and generally, they come to me with the next idea, and if I go, ‘That sounds fun,’ then I’ll do it,” Carrey said. “I don’t feel locked to anything in life, unless it’s something that interests me. I certainly love this crew, I love this gang that makes these movies, and I love the fans. There’s a lot of really great energy around it, great responses, and the fans jump in and say, ‘How about if you do this?’ They’ve been super helpful. I think we’re all making this movie together.“
