Elijah Wood Doesn’t Want Anyone Playing Frodo for a Lord of the Rings Movie as Long as He’s “Alive and Able”
If anyone other than Elijah Wood wants to play Frodo in a future Lord of the Rings movie, you might have to pry the role from Wood’s cold, dead hands. While Wood is still not confirmed to star in the upcoming LOTR movies, The Hunt for Gollum, the actor has made it clear that he does not want anyone else to play the role as long as he’s “alive and able.”
Wood Wants to Play Frodo Until the End
While recently speaking with The Sunday Times, Wood said, “I certainly wouldn’t want anybody else to play Frodo as long as I’m alive and able.” The subject of Wood reprising his iconic role as Mr. Frodo Baggins came up after unconfirmed reports that Leo Woodall could take over the role of Aragorn from Viggo Mortensen in the upcoming film.
Wood Elaborates on His Love for Frodo
“It hasn’t been officially announced, but at a convention last August, Ian sort of let the cat out of the bag. So there is a good chance,” Wood said about his potential Frodo return. “I’m not able to officially say anything until it’s announced, but I will say I’m thrilled with the prospect of another film. It’s always a little nerve-racking when people talk about new movies for a world like Middle-earth. Everyone gets a little protective and hopes it retains its level of integrity, but this story is fun, thrilling. There is a genuine feeling of getting the band back together.”
“I can also recognize what fun that is going to be — when you are in the cinema, and you see the hat turn around, and it’s Gandalf,” Wood added. “Because I’m also a fan, and excited to see how it all comes together.”
Revisiting Fellowship
Coincidentally, I just got back from a screening of the extended version of The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring last night. Firstly, the film holds up in every way. I shudder to think how much time has passed since the film’s 2001 release, but I’m thrilled to report it’s aged like a fine wine. If I’m being honest, aspects of Fellowship look better than some modern movies, especially in the creature department. I can understand why the role of Frodo is personal for Wood, and why he’d want to hold onto the part as long as he’s able to do it. After a fresh reminder of how well Wood embodies the character, I can’t think of anyone else I’d rather see traipsing around Middle-earth for another high fantasy adventure. What about you?
