Joe Carnahan on The A-Team sequels that never were: “We should have made three of these”
It’s been over fifteen years since the release of The A-Team movie, but director Joe Carnahan is still upset that the plan for more sequels didn’t quite come together.
Joe Carnahan Wanted More A-Team Sequels
Based on the ’80s TV series of the same name, The A-Team tells the story of a Special Forces team that escapes and sets out to clear their names after being imprisoned for a crime they did not commit. The film starred Liam Neeson, Bradley Cooper, Sharlto Copley, Rampage Jackson, Jessica Biel, Patrick Wilson, and more. It received mixed reviews upon its release in 2010 and grossed $177 million worldwide against a $110 million budget.
Looking back, Carnahan told Empire that “This is one of those movies where we screwed up the marketing. We should have made three of these.” He added that The A-Team is as “close to me making a superhero film” as we’re likely to get.
He continued, praising the cast. “The guys had spent a lot of time together, and there’s a great sense of the cast here,” he said. “Rampage [Jackson], who was not a professional actor, was so good in that BA role. Forget Mr T; Rampage is just a much better actor.“
Is the film the best in the world? No. But I thought it was a lot of fun, and it would have been great to have seen the gang get back together at least once more. There were plans for a sequel at the beginning, but after the film underperformed, those plans were scrapped.
Carnahan’s Last Movie
The Rip, the action thriller starring Ben Affleck and Matt Damon, debuted on Netflix earlier this year. “In this dirty-cop thriller, suspicion falls on everyone as Lieutenant Dane Dumars (Damon) and Detective Sergeant J.D. Byrne (Affleck) lead a Tactical Narcotics Team following up on a tip about a cartel stash house,” reads the official description. “The rip — a term for when cops seize criminal assets — is $20 million, and every dollar must be counted before they can leave the house, allowing time for mistrust to grow within the team.” The film has been a big success on the streaming service, and you can check out a review from our own Chris Bumbray right here.
