The Madison Interview: Matthew Fox, Beau Garrett, Ben Schnetzer, Rebecca Spence, & more talk Taylor Sheridan’s latest drama

Taylor Sheridan’s latest drama, The Madison, is unlike anything the Yellowstone creative has done before, and we’re thankful for the change of pace. Instead of focusing on crime, betrayal, and revenge, The Madison takes an in-depth look at the grieving process as the Clyburn family’s lives are forever changed after a tragic accident. Before The Madison, Mayor of Kingstown was my favorite of Sheridan’s expansive universe of shows. However, after spending time with the Clyburns in Madison, Montana, I’m bestowing the crown on Stacy Clyburn (Michelle Pfeiffer) and the survivors of this reflective, emotional series.

During our interviews with select cast members, we spoke with Matthew Fox (Paul) and Beau Garrett (Abigail) about filming in the majestic state of Montana and what it feels like to work in such a breathtaking locale alongside a group of fantastic actors and crew. We also discuss methods for winding down after a hard day of filming, and discover that Fox is familiar with the land after spending much time there during his earlier years.

While speaking with Ben Schnetzer (Van) and Rebecca Spence (Liliana), we talk about establishing emotional barriers so as not to get too close to your characters when the cameras stop rolling. I also get to wag my finger at the duo, since Liliana made me cry on several occasions, and I desperately want Van to come to my house and read me a bedtime story. There’s something about his voice and swagger in this show. Outstanding.

Finally, we talk with Kevin Zegers (Cade) and Danielle Vasinova (Kestrel) about their respective characters, and the importance of extending hospitality and patience to your fellow neighbors. Zegers and Vasinova both display a lot of pride in their performance and their character’s values, which comes across in the show as a warm hug amidst all the tears and questions about an uncertain future.

In Alex Maidy’s 9/10 review, he says, “The Madison works as well as it does because it is nothing like Yellowstone. Taylor Sheridan has crafted a story about conflict that is devoid of criminal violence, but other forms of violence can wreak havoc on people. This series relies on the core themes of family, romance, and trauma, not for entertainment, but to showcase the depths of perseverance and resilience in the face of the hardest experiences people can go through. I had started to think that Taylor Sheridan was only capable of soap operas, crime thrillers, or a blend of the two, but The Madison has redeemed him in a way I did not expect. This is a touching drama that will hit you emotionally and gut-wrenchingly, but will also leave you wanting to take stock of your own family and relationships. The Madison is a journey that is worth investing in and leaves enough threads open to keep you wanting to come back for more when season two debuts.”

I could not agree more, and look forward to seeing the second season on Paramount+ when it arrives.
