John Carpenter’s first original graphic novel, Cathedral, is set to reach shelves in August

Storm King Comics has announced that Cathedral, the first original graphic novel from legendary filmmaker John Carpenter, is set for an August 4, 2026 release – and the synopsis brings to mind elements of Carpenter’s 1987 film Prince of Darkness!

Story

Carpenter wrote Cathedral with producer and editor Sandy King and writer Sean Sobczak. Federico De Luca and Luis Guaragna provided the artwork, which is colored by Ryan Winn and lettered by Marshall Dillon. Here’s the synopsis for the 120-page graphic novel:

The middle of downtown Los Angeles sets the scene for John Carpenter’s Cathedral, where an abandoned cathedral stands, fenced in and ignored by the world around it. The preoccupied passers-by have long since ceased to notice the dilapidated church in their midst, never mind sensing the danger and centuries old evil trapped inside its walls.

A gruesome murder one late night pulls the structure into the spotlight, triggering a police investigation into the loss of one of their own. Lieutenant Christine Marks, along with detectives Paul Hernandez and Steve Mayfield, must enter the church in search of the monster that murdered her father. Every step takes them deeper into the belly of the church revealing the mystery of an ancient evil imprisoned within.

Carpenter is also working on a Cathedral album, so fans will be able to listen to the music he had in mind for this story while reading the graphic novel.

Statements

Carpenter provided the following statement: “I saw it in a dream: a nightmare landscape deep underground filled with monsters too weird and sinister to exist in daylight. I knew instantly I had to get these things out of my head and into everyone else’s brains.“

King added, “We have a saying at Storm King, ‘Every dream should be a nightmare.’ By reading Cathedral, you can take John’s dream and let it become your next nightmare.“

A press release notes that Cathedral will be available on August 4, 2026 in bookstores, online, and Storm King Comics, and on August 5, 2026 in comics shops. “But this is only the first step into the dark world of Cathedral.
