Kickboxer and The Perfect Weapon director Mark DiSalle dies at 79

Someone needs to tell 2026 to chill. We’ve lost too many amazing people this year, and sadly, we’ve learned that writer, producer, and director Mark DiSalle has passed away at 79. Fans of ass-kicking action cinema know DiSalle as the creative force behind 1989’s Kickboxer, having created the story and characters for the original. In addition to directing Kickboxer and 1991’s The Perfect Weapon, starring Jeff Speakman, DiSalle produced films such as Bloodsport, Kickboxer, Death Warrant, Street Knight, 4 Minute Mile, Mother’s Day, and Notorious Nick.

When did DiSalle pass away?

Shockingly, DiSalle passed away in August 2025, but word of his death did not circulate until now. Shout out to the team behind Kickboxer: The Original Cut for giving us the heads up. Born in New York, DiSalle focused his talents on action films during the 1980s. His name picked up steam after he produced Bloodsport, a film that helped catapult Jean-Claude Van Damme to the top of the list of martial arts actors to watch. DiSalle directed Kickboxer, an all-time classic of martial arts cinema. I remember watching Kickboxer repeatedly while staying with my cousins back in the day, renting it again from the video store as soon as we had to return it.

Other DiSalle action bangers

DiSalle joined forces with Van Damme again for Death Warrant, starring JCVD as decorated cop Louis Burke, who must infiltrate the jail to find answers to a series of murders within. DiSalle also directed The Perfect Weapon, starring Jeff Speakman as Jeff Sanders, an expert in “kenpo” karate who avenges his Koreatown friend, slain by a mobster in Los Angeles. If you were watching martial arts action in the 1980s and early 90s, DiSalle contributed to your rotation.

If you want to catch DiSalle in minor action roles, keep your eyes peeled for him as a boxer in Bloodsport, a U.S. reporter in Kickboxer, a con food server in Death Warrant, the coach in The Perfect Weapon, a security guard in Street Knight, and as Bureaucrat #3 in Notorious Nick.

As I said, I spent countless hours watching Bloodsport, Kickboxer, and Death Warrant in my youth, and hearing that Mr. DiSalle has passed brings back many warm memories of time spent with family for me. Thank you, Mark, for sharing your talent with the world, and we hope you rest well in the Great Hereafter.
