They Will Kill You Interview: Zazie Beetz and Patricia Arquette on mixing horror and practical action

Last week, at SXSW, I was lucky enough to attend the world premiere of the highly anticipated horror flick They Will Kill You. Directed by Kirill Sokolov, it’s the first movie from Andy and Barbara Muschietti’s new production shingle, Noctura, which has been designed to make hardcore action and horror flicks—and certainly They Will Kill You puts that stamp on their product right out of the gate.

While in Austin, I took part in the junket and was excited to speak to the movie’s two stars, Zazie Beetz and Patricia Arquette. I must admit to being pretty psyched to speak to both, but Arquette was something else, as I grew up on a steady diet of her movies, including True Romance and Lost Highway, two of my favourites. But let’s not forget her first big role was as the final girl in a classic horror flick, A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: The Dream Warriors. It turns out Arquette has very fond memories of the part and has always been a fan of horror, which is why she wanted to return to the genre in They Will Kill You.

As for Zazie Beetz, while she’s done action before in Deadpool 2, this is another level for her, with the film eschewing CGI in favor of all practical effects, including a standout fight where her character demolishes a room full of bad guys in the dark with a flaming axe. Turns out the flaming axe was very real, and Beetz shows a real flair for action in a role that could make her a classic horror final girl.

Check out the interview embedded above as both dig into They Will Kill You, and stay tuned this week for plenty more interviews, including a sit-down with the great Heather Graham. They Will Kill You opens on Friday (check out my review HERE).
