DISTANT LANDS Official Teaser Trailer
LOVE, DEATH + ROBOTS | Official Trailer

Reactions to A24’s The Drama hit social media and they prepare you for an uncomfortably twisted good time

You’re cordially invited…

Zendaya and Robert Pattinson will be starring in Dune: Part Three this year. But before you see them in Denis Villeneuve’s epic space opera, they’re also playing each other’s intended in a rom-com titled The Drama. However, this won’t just be any rom-com, but a rom-com from A24, so there will, of course, be some twisted angle to the film. In fact, none other than Ari Aster will be producing the movie with Lars Knudsen through their Square Peg banner, with Kristoffer Borgli and Tyler Campellone on board to produce under Dilemma Films, in collaboration with A24. Writer/director Borgli also brought us the Nicolas Cage offbeat comedy Dream Scenario, if that’s any indication of the kind of madness we’re in for.

Dramatic reactions

Early reactions to The Drama have hit social media after its recent premiere in Los Angeles. So, what are people saying about it?
Demet, the editor-in-chief of Nexus Point Media, has raved about the film, saying, “#TheDrama is a triumph for A24 and Kristoffer Borgli. It is beautifully shot, perfectly paced and accompanied by a mesmerizing Daniel Pemberton score. Zendaya and Robert Pattinson are hypnotic. I couldn’t take my eyes off the screen. It is very twisted and darkly funny. What a film!”

Courtney Howard of Variety and The AV Club had a ball with the film, saying, “LOVED Kristoffer Borgli’s #TheDrama. An unconventional, provocative rom-com that mixes gallows humor, satire and cringe com to enhance the relationship drama component. Robert Pattinson perfectly squirrelly, awkward & neurotic. Zendaya’s filled with delicate vulnerability.”

Nora Dominick of BuzzFeed found Zendaya and Pattinson to have an amazing chemistry in the film as she posted, “got to see THE DRAMA, and no surprise, there is clearly a reason they are doing multiple projects together because Zendaya and Robert Pattinson are so great together. they’ve got chemistry in this romance movie that uses some dark (cringe-inducing) humor to its advantage”

Jairo Jiménez praised Borgli for capturing an uneasy feeling in the romance, saying, “THE DRAMA is a perfectly executed exercise in disturbing romantic discomfort from Borgli. Robert Pattinson & Zendaya are sublime, turning their chemistry into cutting glances & suffocating silences — you won’t be able to take your eyes off them. A provocatively intelligent film!”

Matt Neglia, the owner and editor-in-chief of the Next Best Picture podcast, compares the film to a car wreck…but in a surprisingly good way. He posted, “THE DRAMA is my kind of dark romantic comedy: deeply complex, incredibly stressful, provocative, and uncomfortably funny. It’s an examination not just of a relationship, but of our capacity for empathy toward people who may have done, or even contemplated, the worst imaginable things. Zendaya and Robert Pattinson play off each other so well, generating crackling chemistry while balancing cringe-inducing comedy with open-hearted sincerity in every facet of their emotionally demanding performances. Brilliantly edited, Kristoffer Borgli’s latest unfolds like a dreadful, violent car wreck that keeps piling up; you want to look away in disgust, yet it becomes increasingly impossible as the tragedy increases.”
