Adam Sandler boards Scott Cooper’s Time Out at Netflix with Willem Dafoe, Gaby Hoffman, Steve Zahn, and more

Adam Sandler and Netflix are back in business as the Uncut Gems and Spaceman star gets ready to lead Time Out, a new film from Scott Cooper (Springsteen: Deliver Me from Nowhere, Crazy Heart, The Pale Blue Eye). Cooper’s latest feature is already shaping up to become a star-studded affair, with Willem Dafoe, Gaby Hoffman, F. Murray Abraham, Steve Zahn, and Adam Horowitz also leading the cast. According to Deadline, Cooper will write, direct, and produce Time Out, with Tracey Landon acting as an executive producer.

What’s Time Out about?

Taking inspiration from L’Emploi Du Temps by Laurent Cantet and Robin Campillo, Deadline says the film “follows Vincent (Sandler), who after being fired from his job can’t bring himself to tell his wife and family. Rather than reveal the truth, he spins a web of lies to conceal his situation. He escalates his lies further when he creates an investment scheme and asks friends to contribute, and the deception threatens to overwhelm his life and his family.”

Good grief. As much as we try to be good people, we all know how a lie can spiral out of control. The part where Vincent drags his friends into his deception doesn’t sit well with me. Digging your own grave is one thing, but handing your friends a shovel without letting them in on the scheme is too much for me.

Cooper on being blown away by L’Emploi Du Temps

“I first encountered Laurent Cantet’s film in 2001, and it’s lived with me ever since,” Cooper said. “I’ve been thinking about revisiting it for years, but now felt like the right moment — we’re living in a time where questions of identity, work, and self-worth have become impossible to ignore.”

Regardless of how many dramatic bangers Sandler leads, I’m still amazed by his ability to transform from the goofball in Happy Gilmore 2 to a scumbag like the one he plays in Uncut Gems. He’s incredibly versatile, and the thought of him working alongside such a stacked cast for Scott Cooper’s Time Out is exciting. I’ve never seen L’Emploi Du Temps, but I know my wife has, and I’m eager to get her opinion on this news when she arrives home from work later today. Netflix is always looking for the next hot ticket with Sandler, and Time Out feels like another project he could knock out of the park.
