Apex: Charlize Theron / Taron Egerton survival thriller gets a new trailer ahead of April release

Charlize Theron (Mad Max: Fury Road) and Taron Egerton (Rocketman) star in the upcoming survival thriller Apex for the Netflix streaming service, which Baltasar Kormákur (Contraband) directed from a screenplay by Jeremy Robbins, who earned writing credits on many episodes of the TV series The Purge (set in the world of the Blumhouse film franchise). The movie is scheduled to start streaming on April 24th – and with that date swiftly approaching, a new trailer has been unveiled! You can check it out in the embed above.

Story

A genre movie that has been described as “Free Solo meets Silence of the Lambs,” Apex sees Theron taking on the role of a rock climber and adrenaline junkie who finds out that nature isn’t the only dangerous element out to get her when she sets out on an expedition in the wild. Egerton’s character is said to be a psychopath stalking his human prey… with Theron’s character being his prey. The title is a play on an apex being the top or highest part of something (like a cliff) and a particularly dangerous predator in the wild.

Theron is producing the film with Dawn Olmstead, Beth Kono, and AJ Dix under their recently-launched Secret Menu banner. Kormákur is producing for RVK Productions. Other producers include Ian Bryce and Chernin Entertainment’s Peter Chernin, Jenno Topping, and David Ready.

Apex has been Rated R for some strong violence, grisly images, nudity, and language.

Theron previously worked with Netflix on the graphic novel-inspired films The Old Guard and The Old Guard 2, while Egerton starred in their hit thriller Carry-On. Eric Bana, star of the Netflix series Untamed, plays the partner of Theron’s character.

Quotes

In a recent interview with People, Theron explained all the prep she put into the role: “I had never climbed, except for trees when I was a kid in Africa,” she said. “It’s great. It’s so much fun. In this case, I was climbing a lot. I was climbing pretty much every day. And when I got to Australia I was kayaking a lot. That’s a massive workout. I was just getting a strong as I could because I climb all of the actual mountains in the movie. I’m climbing all of it — and I’m climbing it barefoot on my own raw feet.” Getting to play the villain also gives Egerton a role he doesn’t usually tackle, and he sports a shaved head. “I was very excited by not having to worry about what my hair looked like every day,” he said.
