Animal Friends: Ryan Reynolds and Jason Momoa’s R-rated live-action animated hybrid comedy hibernates until 2027
As this year’s winter season continues to melt away, Warner Bros. is casting Legendary‘s live-action animation hybrid film, Animal Friends, back into hibernation until January 22, 2027. According to Deadline, the move is due to talent scheduling. The project stars Ryan Reynolds, Jason Momoa, Aubrey Plaza, Dan Levy, Lil Rel Howery, Addison Rae, and Ellie Bamber, all of whom are extremely busy with one commitment or another. To get them all in the same place to do press for the upcoming film, Animal Friends, is shifting to a date that works for all involved.
What’s Animal Friends about?
Peter Atencio (Jean-Claude Van Johnson, Keanu, Key and Peele) directs Animal Friends from a screenplay by Kevin Burrows and Matt Mider. The official logline for Animal Friends reads: Two fugitive animals embark on an adventure across America to find the ranch that was once their home, healing their friendship while pursued by an equally odd-couple DEA agent and Fish and Wildlife ranger with something to prove. Producers include Legendary, Maximum Effort, and Prime Focus Studios.
What else are Reynolds and Momoa working on?
As always, Ryan Reynolds has several projects in various stages of production, including Mayday, an upcoming action-adventure comedy. John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein, the team behind Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves, direct Mayday from their own script, which focuses on Lieutenant Troy Brennan’s reconnaissance mission over Soviet territory that goes awry, forcing him to crash-land and survive in Russian wilderness while evading capture or rescue. The film stars Ryan Reynolds as Lieutenant Troy ‘Assassin’ Kelly and Kenneth Branagh as Nikoai Ustinov, with Maria Bakalova, David Morse, Wendy Crewson, Louis Cancelmi, Clark Johnson, and more.
As for Jason Momoa, he recently completed filming for DC’s Supergirl, Legendary’s Street Fighter, Denis Villeneuve’s Dune: Part Three, and is in the process of filming Protecting Jared, an upcoming action comedy directed by Ruben Fleischer, starring Jai Courtney, Andy Samberg, Aimee Carrero, and Tavita Woodard. Momoa is also gearing up to reprise his role as Garrett “The Garbage Man” Garrison for A Minecraft Movie 2, starring Jack Black, Danielle Brooks, Matt Berry, Jennifer Coolidge, and Kirsten Dunst.
Animal Friends sounds like fun. Knowing it comes from the director of Key and Peele gives me hope that it will be more than a flash-in-the-pan R-rated comedy. How about you? Do you think Reynolds and Momoa are a good pairing? Let us know in the comments section below.
