Amanda Peet reveals that Bruce Willis picked her “out of nowhere” to be in her breakout role in The Whole Nine Yards
The Whole Nine Yards
Amid Bruce Willis’ reign in thrillers from a fresh-faced M. Night Shyamalan at the turn of the century, the iconic action star also worked in a couple of comedies around that time. One of them, The Whole Nine Yards, had Willis pair up with Matthew Perry right as Friends was dominating the sitcom world. The Whole Nine Yards came from My Cousin Vinny director Jonathan Lynn and the comedy became a nice hit for all involved. In the film, Perry plays a man whose world takes a turn when Willis’ character moves into his neighborhood and he discovers that this new neighbor is a former mob hitman. Amanda Peet would come away as one of the memorable parts of the movie, playing a wannabe contract killer.
Peet gets nostalgic for the film
Recently, Amanda Peet attended a screening of her latest film, Fantasy Life, which was hosted by Greenwich Entertainment and The Cinema Society, and she was asked in a Q&A which project of hers she gets nostalgic for. According to People, she would reveal, “I just weirdly was just thinking about Bruce Willis.” The actress revealed that Willis “did pick me kind of just out of nowhere” to play a large supporting role in The Whole Nine Yards, which would showcase her in a lot of the film’s humor. Peet went toe-to-toe with co-stars Willis and Perry in physical comedy and goofy demeanor. Peet explained, “I was just doing, like, Law and Order episodes and stuff. There were 20 women in the hallway lined up to read with him who had gotten the final callback for The Whole Nine Yards.”
Peet also admitted that there were things about the movie she “didn’t like” and wishes “a lot of things had been different about it,” but she also emphasized, “But it was a big thing and I feel sentimental about him [Willis] and Jonathan Lynn and the whole experience.” She also reveals that she stayed close with Perry after working with him, “Now that they’re kind of gone, I feel very sentimental about that. I was really young and I thought I was doing Molière, the way I treated going to work. They would be like drinking in the lobby and partying, and I’d be like, ‘I have to learn my lines.’ I was so serious. I look back on it with fondness now.”
Peet can also be seen in the upcoming season of Your Friends & Neighbors on April 3.
