The official synopsis reads: “Set against the sun-bleached grit of Los Angeles, Crime 101 weaves the tale of an elusive jewel thief (Chris Hemsworth) whose string of heists along the 101 freeway have mystified police. When he eyes the score of a lifetime, his path crosses that of a disillusioned insurance broker (Halle Berry) who is facing her own crossroads. Convinced he has found a pattern, a relentless detective (Mark Ruffalo) is closing in, raising the stakes even higher. As the heist approaches, the line between hunter and hunted begins to blur, and all three are faced with life-defining choices–and the realisation that there can be no turning back.“

What We Thought

The film received largely positive reviews upon release, including one from our own EJ Tangonan, although he did find himself a little let down by the ending. “Frankly, the main thing that really brought the movie down a bit for me was the ending,” he wrote. “There are a ton of seeds that were planted and things set in motion to explode for the finale and Crime 101 just didn’t stick the landing enough for me. I am not familiar with the source material it was based on, so it may be faithful, but it just didn’t do anything for me and I left the movie with a bit of a dissatisfied feeling, despite enjoying everything before it for the most part. I do recommend it for crime fans but it falls just short of something great.” You can check out the rest of his review right here.
