Take the sword and stand tall. The new Masters of the Universe trailer has arrived.
Prince Adam returns to Eternia to save his people from the vile clutches of Skeletor in the new trailer for Masters of the Universe. Amazon MGM Studios has released a new trailer for the live-action adaptation of the 80s Filmation cartoon. This trailer shows more of the drama and the arc of Prince Adam when he’s in Eternia, with a small reference to the Earth angle. The film stars Nicholas Galitzine, Camila Mendes, Alison Brie, James Purefoy, Morena Baccarin, Jóhannes Haukur Jóhannesson, Charlotte Riley, Featuring Kristen Wiig as the voice of “Roboto” with Jared Leto and Idris Elba.
The official synopsis from Amazon MGM reads,
“In MASTERS OF THE UNIVERSE, Director Travis Knight brings the legendary franchise back to the big screen in this epic live-action adventure. After being separated for 15 years, the Sword of Power leads Prince Adam (Nicholas Galitzine) back to Eternia where he discovers his home shattered under the fiendish rule of Skeletor (Jared Leto). To save his family and his world, Adam must join forces with his closest allies, Teela (Camila Mendes) and Duncan/Man-At-Arms (Idris Elba), and embrace his true destiny as He-Man — the most powerful man in the universe.”
Travis Knight, who has brought us Kubo and the Two Strings and Bumblebee, directs this film from a script by Chris Butler and Aaron Nee & Adam Nee & Dave Callaham. Aaron Nee & Adam Nee and Alex Litvak & Michael Finch are credited with coming up with the story. Todd Black, Jason Blumenthal, Robbie Brenner, DeVon Franklin are on board the project as producers. The executive producers on the film include Ynon Kreiz, Bill Bannerman and David Bloomfield.
I used to watch the TV show as a child, but I really have an affection for the Dolph Lundgren Cannon Films Masters of the Universe movie. Travis Knight is a filmmaker who can reliably bring effective emotion out of his projects, and during his press tour for Bumblebee, the director said he grew up with shows like Transformers, G.I. Joe, He-Man and the Masters of the Universe. So, the choice to have him helm this movie was a great decision. However, neither of the trailers have been able to truly “wow” me. I have faith in Knight since the Bumblebee trailers also never really pumped me up, and the movie ended up being one of my favorites of the Transformers franchise. It’s almost like, despite the quality of the final film, the trailers for his big-budget efforts can’t capture the heart of his movies and they don’t lend themselves to exciting trailers. That’s just me, though. I still trust he can stick the landing.
Do these trailers land for you? Is this the live-action He-Man adventure you’ve envisioned since the 80s? Sound off below!
