The first reactions to The Super Mario Galaxy Movie call it an unrelenting “sugar rush” with fan service galore

One of my most anticipated movies of the year, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, is the talk of Twitter this afternoon, as the first reactions to the animated sequel reach social media. The reactions vary, of course, though most agree it shares many of the original’s flaws while still packing enough surprises to keep audiences shouting “Wahoo!”

You can check out some of the first reactions to The Super Mario Galaxy Movie below:

#TheSuperMarioGalaxyMovie is a mixed bag. There are aspects that I found stronger than the first (which I loved!) but the promise of adapting Galaxy feels like an afterthought and it is shockingly low on vibes. The game has a stronger story?

#TheSuperMarioGalaxyMovie is the original powered by a superstar. A 100 minute sugar rush, with fan service galore, that starts at 90mph and barely stops for breath. Largely the same issues with the first movie remain, but fans will be delighted. Full review Tuesday. pic.twitter.com/O5wZdETlBA

THE SUPER MARIO GALAXY MOVIE faithfully recreates the visuals of the iconic Nintendo games and thankfully doesn’t shoehorn tons of pop songs like the last movie. Unfortunately, it’s marred by unfocused plotting, disjointed pacing, and a lack of heart. Some fun surprises to enjoy… pic.twitter.com/aD9mCWOkIa

The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is a really fun time!

Absolutely gorgeous animation, great voice acting, and an overall fun time at the movies.

As somebody who really loved the first film, I don’t think this movie is as good, but it’s still really solid!

Really the only complaint… https://t.co/68gR2Hlefb pic.twitter.com/5EXha2o71A

THE SUPER MARIO GALAXY MOVIE is surprisingly A LOT better than its predecessor, introducing exciting and revered characters with flair while delivering colorful, vibrant, and far more visually striking visuals and action set pieces that give this sequel a distinct, lively… pic.twitter.com/n6IoRsuJKi

The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is an absolute blast! A dazzling animation spectacle and easily one of the most fun theater experiences of the year. The returning cast is just as great as the first time around, but Fox McCloud and Yoshi completely steal the show. Full review on… pic.twitter.com/ovvtiPigEh

THE SUPER MARIO GALAXY MOVIE is even better than the first.

Bigger action set pieces. It leans more on Brian Tyler’s excellent musical score than needle drops. A gorgeously animated love letter to Mario fans. A very entertaining ride. #SuperMarioMovie @supermariomovie pic.twitter.com/wYKLOYvm2i

Why not both?

While I appreciate wanting to stand out, I don’t know what comparing the new movie to the original Mario Galaxy game accomplishes. They’re two entirely different forms of media, and The Super Mario Galaxy Movie title is exactly that, a title. Nintendo never said they were recreating the game, but rather that they were taking inspiration from it, alongside several other Mario game titles. I haven’t seen the movie yet (I’m seeing it tomorrow), but even the trailers indicate a significant Super Mario Bros. 2 influence.

You can’t ruin my good time

Regardless of what the first reactions to the film say, nothing can deter me from being excited to chill with Mario and his friends on the silver screen again. I had a nostalgia-filled blast with the original, and expect more of the same from the sequel. I don’t need the Mario films to be deep or present some lesson that will resonate with me for years to come. I want to sit back, relax, munch my popcorn, look at the pretty colors, and count the mind-boggling amount of character cameos and Easter eggs that await.

The Super Mario Galaxy Movie will feature the return of Chris Pratt as Mario, Anya Taylor-Joy as Princess Peach, Charlie Day as Luigi, Jack Black as Bowser, Keegan-Michael Key as Toad, and Kevin Michael Richardson as Kamek. New additions for the sequel include Brie Larson as Princess Rosalina, Benny Safdie as Bowser Jr., Issa Rae as Honey Queen, Luis Guzman as Wart, Donald Glover as Yoshi, and Glen Powell as Fox McCloud of the beloved Starfox game franchise. Do a barrel roll!
