The KPop Demon Hunters McDonald’s collab is like an animated miniseries about a “Battle for the Fans”
It’s time to face facts. KPop Demon Hunters is not going away any time soon, and Netflix is going to great lengths to make sure we know they mean business. Since the release of KPop Demon Hunters last year, the multi-Academy Award-winning animated film is everywhere, from official clothing lines to Fortnite skins and more. For the film’s latest collaboration, Huntr/x and the Saja Boys are engaging in a “Battle for the Fans” sponsored by McDonald’s.
Do you want fries with that?
The timed event starts today, March 31, with McDonald’s offering two time-sensitive meals: a Saja Boys-branded breakfast and a Huntr/x Chicken McNugget meal. Each meal comes with a photocard from their respective groups, creating a competition for fan adoration between the two bands. Unlike other Happy Meal tie-ins, the “Battle for the Fans” event arrives alongside a series of commercials that feel more like short films, with Huntr/x and the Saja Boys members voiced by their original voice actors.
A top-tier tie-in
Instead of splitting the fanbase, McDonald’s offers the branded meals during the same window: the Saja Boys meal during breakfast hours, and the Huntr/x meal available to order throughout the rest of the day. While Huntr/x has an advantage, that would be underestimating the fans and their desire to support both bands in this epic battle. The best part about the “Battle for the Fans” event is the animated shorts promoting the duel. The commercials are top-tier, with the humor, heart, and heated rivalry of the Saja Boys and Huntr/x fully intact. If you watch them back-to-back, it’s like a McDonald ‘s-sponsored miniseries ahead of any news about a real-deal movie sequel.
KPop Demon Hunters forever
The lasting power of KPop Demon Hunters is nothing short of an animation miracle. Animated films can become popular, sure, but the staying power of KPop is incredible. Fans can’t seem to get enough of the Saja Boys or Huntr/x, even going so far as to purchase McDonald’s for the chance to own another piece of KPop memorabilia. The absence of a Depry meal is a mistake, but pitting the mystical tiger against both bands feels like a losing battle. For the bands.
