Netflix will stream Eddie Murphy’s AFI Lifetime Achievement Award ceremony in May
A Lifetime of Laughs
Despite what Eddie Murphy’s career evolved into outside of the 80s and 90s, there’s no denying the amazing run of classics he’s given the comedy world. Murphy’s SNL run was one-of-a-kind. For as many famous sketches, like the White Like Me one, there are other great ones that you may not have seen. Then, Eddie would make a huge leap to the big screen in 48 Hrs. and practically never look back.
The American Film Institute (AFI) Board of Trustees is set to give the 51st AFI Life Achievement Award to Eddie Murphy for his outstanding accomplishments in film and beyond. The ceremony takes place at the organization’s Gala Tribute at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles on April 18, 2026.
Netflix and Eddie
Murphy will continue his working relationship with Netflix after working with them on Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F, You People and Being Eddie. According to Variety, after the AFI ceremony awarding Murphy, Netflix is set to stream the event on May 31.
AFI President and CEO Bob Gazzale stated, “AFI is grateful to Ted Sarandos and the talented team at Netflix for the opportunity to share this proud tradition with the world. And to do so in honor of Eddie Murphy will allow us to shine a proper light on the impact of art at a time the world needs it most.” He goes on to add that Murphy is “the most commercially successful African-American actor in the history of the motion picture business and is one of the industry’s top five box-office performers overall.”
Next for Eddie
Murphy revealed that he’s set to play Inspector Clouseau in a new rendition of The Pink Panther, and he’s also developing a zombie action comedy, but it was also recently reported that he will be reuniting with his co-star of The Pickup, Eva Longoria, for Attachment Parenting, an upcoming comedy from Amazon MGM Studios. In addition to leading the cast, Murphy and Longoria will produce via their respective production studios alongside John Davis of Davis Entertainment. Eddie Murphy Productions’ Charisse Hewitt-Webster will also produce, as will Jade Miranda of Hyphenate, Longoria’s production banner.
Attachment Parenting “tells of a psychologist couple whose parenting philosophy is put to the ultimate test when they’re forced to counsel a crime boss’s dysfunctional family while being held hostage at a hotel.” For the moment, Attachment Parenting does not have a director or writer. However, we know the comedy is based on a short story by Julianna Baggott, a bestselling novelist, short story writer, essayist, and poet, who’s penned more than 20 books.
