Meryl Streep to star in Netflix’s limited drama series adaptation of Jonathan Franzen’s The Corrections

I often hear that gathering around the dinner table with family is stressful. I don’t live in the same country as my parent and siblings, so I rarely find myself shackled to the prison that is forced weather talk and navigating the minefield of political discussion. However, I do get together with my wife’s family quite often. Thankfully, they’re awesome. In short, I’m having trouble relating to Netflix‘s latest acquisition, The Corrections, which tells the story of a “last Christmas” family gathering with siblings thrown into a spiral as they strive to be unlike their parents.

Netflix takes a seat at the head of the table

Today, Netflix announced The Corrections, a limited drama series starring Meryl Streep. Netflix recently gave the adaptation of Jonathan Franzen‘s novel a straight-to-series order, 25 years after the National Book Award-winning novel became a runaway bestseller.

According to Netflix, The Corrections is a sharply comic portrait of a Midwestern family whose three unmoored adult siblings desperately resist their mother’s wish for one last Christmas together — each undone by the delusional ambitions that were supposed to save them from becoming their parents.

Cord Jefferson (American Fiction, Watchmen) directs The Corrections from a screenplay written and adapted by Franzen. Streep serves as executive producer, alongside Jefferson, Mark Roybal (Task, Mare of Easttown, No Country for Old Men), Paul Lee (Task, The Summer I Turned Pretty, Dickinson), and Nicole Clemens (Sexy Beast, Shantaram), with the project coming from Paramount Television Studios.

What’s The Corrections about?

Here’s the official synopsis for The Corrections, courtesy of Netflix:

“Franzen’s 2001 novel, a No. 1 New York Times bestseller, follows Enid, Alfred, and their children, Gary, Chip, and Denise, during a particularly tense holiday gathering. Gary might be clinically depressed. Chip lost his job and is struggling professionally. Denise is potentially caught up in an affair. Alfred’s struggling with dementia.  Amidst all their pain and many forks in the road, Enid is determined to deliver the best –– and potentially final — family Christmas.” Naturally, Streep plays Enid.

Streep to dance with the devil (again)

Meryl Streep’s next film is the hotly anticipated sequel to The Devil Wears Prada, The Devil Wears Prada 2, which is set to hit theaters on May 1, 2026. In the film, Streep reprises her iconic role as Miranda Priestly, who’s nearing retirement when she reunites with Ancy Sachs (Anne Hathaway) to face off against her former assistant turned rival: Emily Charlton (Emily Blunt). The upcoming sequel reunited several members of the original cast, with David Frankel returning to direct.
