The Pitt: Supriya Ganesh to exit HBO’s chart-topping medical drama while Ayesha Harris scrubs in as a series regular

Supriya Ganesh, who plays Dr. Samira Mohan on HBO Max‘s The Pitt, is clocking in for her last shift at the Pittsburgh Trauma Medical Center. According to reports, Ganesh is leaving the chart-topping medical drama, while Ayesha Harris, who recurs as night shift resident Dr. Parker Ellis, will become a series regular. Ganesh’s exit is due to a story change for the Emmy, Golden Globe, and Critics’ Choice award-winning show.

Why is Ganesh leaving The Pitt?

Word around the hospital halls is that PTMC is a teaching hospital, and staff turnover is common at such facilities. Some fans have seen the writing on the wall, as Ganesh’s character has been contemplating her next steps in her medical career after fate derailed her plans to return to her home state of New Jersey. She’s the latest actor to leave The Pitt after Tracy Ifeachor’s Dr. Heather Collins exited the series after the first season.

Meanwhile, Ayesha Harris appears in several episodes of the hit HBO Max drama as a senior resident on PTMC’s night shift. She’ll return to the show as a series regular in future episodes.

Critical acclaim for The Pitt

Since its January 2025 launch, The Pitt has captured audiences’ attention and become a critical hit. Many praise the drama’s intense atmosphere, meticulous attention to detail, complex characters, and nail-biting depictions of real-life medical emergencies. We’re massive fans of The Pitt here at JoBlo, with our resident TV reviewer Alex Maidy giving the latest season a 9 out of 10 in his review.

While writing about the latest season, Alex said, “With only minor quibbles that come to mind, I once again loved every intense episode I have seen of The Pitt’s second season. I loved ER during its initial run, but The Pitt adopts a no-nonsense approach, bombarding audiences with the intensity of a shift in an emergency room without getting bogged down in soap opera subplots. I know the potential for any emergency room to deal with this many shocking cases in a single day is likely unrealistic, but it is still closer to reality than the fictional settings of Grey’s Anatomy or Chicago Med. The Pitt is still a television show and one that breaks the expectations that we have come to accept from medical dramas. This is a great show that tackles current events from an informed perspective while remaining incredibly entertaining. With returning favorites and new additions mixing into a solid ensemble, The Pitt continues to be one of the best shows of the year, only a week into January.”
