Trigun: STARGAZE Interviews: Johnny Yong Bosch, Sarah Roach, David Mantranga, & Aleix Tipton talk the anime’s epic conclusion

If I could tell 17-year-old me that I’d be interviewing the cast of a Trigun series in my mid-forties, I don’t know if I would believe myself. I have vivid memories of watching the original Trigun anime with my friend Brendan, the two of us sitting on his bedroom couch, possibly inhaling illicit substances, having a grand ol’ time as Vash and his friends dazzled us with spectacles of over-the-top action and attitude. It’s amazing where life can take you. I never thought I’d be in the position I’m in, talking about the epic conclusion of an anime series from my youth, with Johnny Yong Bosch (Vash), Sarah Roach (Meryl Stryfe), David Matranga (Nicholas D. Wolfwood), and Alexis Tipton (Milly Thompson). As I’d said, if 17-year-old me could see me now.

Recently, I had the pleasure of speaking with the cast of Trigun: STARGAZE, the follow-up season to Trigun: STAMPEDE, and the conclusion of the legendary Trigun anime series that’s been around since 1998. Trigun: STAMPEDE and Trigun: STARGAZE reimagine the original story with new art, narrative elements, and new voices. It’s a mind-bending experience to see Vash and his cohorts in this new light, especially when you think of the series’ roots.

While speaking with Johnny and Sarah, we discussed Vash’s evolution throughout the series, and whether he’s changed in the 30 years he’s been cracking wise and doing the impossible. We also talk with Sarah about Meryl and how she’s gone from an extreme insurance agent to an intrepid investigative reporter for the reimagining. We find out if anything about Vash or Meryl inspires the actors in their everyday lives, and if the duo has kept any memorabilia from their Trigun experience.

Next, we speak with David and Alexis about their respective characters, diving into the show’s allegorical content, Milly’s revamped design, Nicholas’s cynical approach to… well, everything, and the driving force behind Vash and Nicholas’s complicated relationship.

Trigun: STARGAZE is a visual treat with positively stunning camerawork, inspired character chemistry, and a story that, despite drawing on the original series, feels as fresh and inspired as ever. I highly recommend checking it out!
