Widow’s Bay teaser: Matthew Rhys is the mayor of a totally safe and completely normal small island town
Apple TV has released the first teaser trailer for Widow’s Bay, a comedy-horror series starring Matthew Rhys as the mayor of a small island community off the New England coast that’s totally safe and completely normal… I promise. Check that out above!
What, Who, When?
The official logline reads: “Mayor Tom Loftis (Rhys) is desperate to revive his struggling community. There’s no wifi, spotty cellular reception, and he must contend with superstitious locals who believe their island is cursed. He wants these people to respect him. They don’t. They think he is soft and cowardly. And he is. But Loftis is determined to build a better future for his teenage son and turn the island into a tourist destination. Miraculously, he succeeds: tourists are finally coming. Unfortunately, the locals were right. After decades of calm, the old stories that seemed too ludicrous to be true start happening again.“
Widow’s Bay is created and executive produced by Katie Dippold (Parks & Recreation), who also serves as showrunner. Hiro Murai (Atlanta) directs and executive produces. Murai will helm five of the ten episodes, with Ti West (MaXXXine), Sam Donovan (Severance), and Andrew DeYoung (The Chair Company) tackling the others.
In addition to Rhys, the series also stars Kate O’Flynn (My Lady Jane), Stephen Root (King of the Hill), Kingston Rumi Southwick (Presumed Innocent), Kevin Carroll (Snowfall), and Dale Dickey (Bookie).
The first two episodes will debut on Apple TV on April 29, followed by new episodes every Wednesday through June 17, with a special two-episode release on May 27. This is just a teaser trailer, but it did grab my interest. Plus, Rhys is always worth a watch.
Presumed Innocent Season 2
Widow’s Bay isn’t the only Apple TV series Rhys has on his slate. He will also star alongside Rachel Brosnahan (Superman) and Jack Reynor (The Mummy) in the second season of Presumed Innocent.
The new season of the legal drama will be based on Dissection of a Murder by Jo Murray. Although the logline for the series remains under wraps, the synopsis for the novel reads: “When Leila Reynolds is handed her first murder case, she’s shocked at how high-profile it is: the murder of a well-respected, well-known judge. This shouldn’t be the kind of case she’s leading; it’s way beyond her expertise. But the defendant, Jack Millman, is clear. He wants her, and only her.” Brosnahan plays the defence attorney, Rhys plays her husband, the prosecutor on the case, and Reynor plays her client.
