Louis C.K. is reteaming with Netflix for his first stand-up comedy special in nine years
Nine years after his fall from grace, embattled comedian Louis C.K. is returning to Netflix for Ridiculous, a new comedy special. C.K.’s latest special premieres globally this summer, with the comedian directing and executive producing the presentation himself, alongside Lea Cohen Zuckerman and Brady Nasfell, who also serve as EPs.
C.K. emerges from hibernation
Ridiculous marks C.K.’s most significant attempt to reclaim the spotlight since 2017, when he admitted to sexual misconduct with five women. C.K. has apologized for his actions and hopes to pick up the pieces by making people laugh again. Ridiculous is a return to the mainstream, but that hasn’t kept C.K. from performing shows in low-key venues, steadily working his way back into people’s good graces. As the story goes, Netflix cut all ties with C.K. after accusations (and admission) about his behavior went public. However, time appears to heal all wounds, as Netflix proudly hosts his next special and invites him to perform at its annual comedy fest.
In addition to his new Netflix special, Louis C.K. will perform at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles on Tuesday, May 5, as part of Netflix’s Joke Fest comedy festival.
Stand-up comedy is a tough act
Stand-up comedy has never been my cup of tea. I find the exchange between the comedian and the audience awkward, though it’s not like I haven’t been to a show or two. I saw C.K. at Madison Square Garden more than a decade ago, after receiving tickets as a birthday gift. It was fun, though my preferred comics are the late Bill Hicks, Iliza Shlesinger, Josh Johnson, and Pete Holmes. Essentially, hilarious people who don’t tend to punch down. Obviously, comedy is subjective, and people’s ability to “take a joke” varies from one individual to another. While some comedians aren’t concerned about hurting people’s feelings, I tend to roll with comics who find other ways to make people laugh. Observational comedy is my bread and butter, or smart commentary about the state of the world.
