Terrified remake: Noah Hawley to direct Aterrados adaptation for Warner Bros.

In December 2018, it was reported that Guillermo del Toro would be producing a remake of the 2017 Argentine horror film Terrified for Fox Searchlight, with Sacha Gervasi (The Terminal) on board to write the screenplay. The project has since moved to Warner Bros., with del Toro and Gervasi dropping out along the way – but The Hollywood Reporter has broken the news that, all these years later, the remake is finally moving forward. Noah Hawley, the Emmy-winning creative behind the Fargo and Alien: Earth TV shows, will be directing the film.

What is Terrified about?

Written and directed by Demian Rugna, Terrified (a.k.a. Aterrados) has the following synopsis: Because of his fascination with the paranormal, a police officer on the brink of retirement is asked to investigate a series of strange deaths happening doors apart from each other. There he meets a famed paranormal investigator who is looking into a disappearance in the area as well. Together, with another paranormal enthusiast, they look into these strange incidents and uncover a terrifying connection.

The original Terrified cast includes:

Maximiliano Ghione as Commissioner Funes

Norberto Gonzalo as Jano

Elvira Onetto as Dr. Mora Albreck

George L. Lewis as Rosentock

Julieta Vallina as Alicia

Demián Salomón as Walter

Agustín Rittano as Juan

Natalia Señorales as Clara

Matias Rascovschi as the boy

Lorenzo Langer as Patricio

Who’s behind the Terrified remake?

Hawley and Rugna are working together to develop the remake, which Hawley is also producing through his company 26 Keys. It’s unclear whether the remake will closely follow the original film’s story.

Back in the days when Guillermo del Toro was going to be producing the film and Sacha Gervasi was working on the script, it was rumored that Demian Rugna would be directing the remake himself. But now, he has passed the torch over to Noah Hawley.

During the COVID-19 pandemic lockdowns, Rugna said he was working on the script for a sequel, but we haven’t heard anything more about Terrified 2 since then.
