The director of Marvel’s X-Men reboot says Beef creator and The Bear writer are both working on rewrites of the upcoming mutant epic
I don’t know about you, but I would not want to be in charge of rebooting Marvel‘s X-Men for their MCU return. Imagine the pressure! Everyone and their grandmother is going to judge this reimagining of pop culture’s most famous mutants like nobody’s business. I wouldn’t be able to sleep. Anyway, according to Collider, two creative people braver than I are up to the task. The outlet says Beef creator Lee Sung Jin and The Bear co-showrunner Joanna Calo are rewriting the latest draft of the upcoming mutant mayhem. The news of their involvement comes from X-Men reboot director Jake Schreier, whose work you’ve seen with movies like Marvel’s Thunderbolts*, Paper Towns, Beef, Kidding, Skeleton Crew, and multiple music videos.
Schreier on bringing Lee and Calo abord the X-train
“When you go back and read X-Men [comics], there’s ideology, but also interpersonal drama, almost of a soap opera quality,” Schreier told Collider. “Having writers who understand both how to drive ideology from personal stakes, if we get that right, that’s what will feel most honest to what X-Men can be.”
Marvel’s X-Men reboot reunites Schreier, Lee, and Calo, who worked on last year’s Thunderbolts*, one of my Top 3 favorite MCU movies (alongside Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Iron Man). Before Lee and Calo came aboard, others had tried to reboot the X-Men, including Michael Lesslie, who wrote a screenplay for the film, revising an earlier draft by Aaron Rabin and Zach Dean.
It’s a tough job, but someone’s got to do it
It’s taken what feels like an eternity for Marvel’s X-Men to officially join the MCU, after Disney’s 2019 purchase of much of 21st Century Fox’s entertainment assets. Truth be told, I’d rather Marvel take their time getting the reintroduction right than rush it through to theaters. A lot rides on the X-Men reboot, as the initiative stands to define a new MCU era, with mutants at the center of the next several years. When I think about how well Schreier, Lee, and Calo handled the misfit characters of Thunderbolts*, I’m hopeful they’ll bring that same attention and heart to the X-Men team. As I’d said, I wouldn’t want to be in charge of this reboot, and I commend them for stepping up to the plate.
