Final Destination: Bloodlines directors to helm Metal Gear Solid movie for Sony
Here we go again. Sony Pictures is looking to get the ball rolling on its long-gestating movie adaptation of Hideo Kojima’s Metal Gear Solid video-game franchise, and they’ve tapped Final Destination: Bloodlines directors Zach Lipovsky and Adam B. Stein to helm the project.
First-look Deal with Sony Pictures
According to THR, Lipovsky and Stein have actually signed a “sweeping and expansive first-look deal” with Sony Pictures. The pair’s newly launched company, Wonderlab, will develop films they will direct, as well as original projects they will produce for others. The aim is to create “wildly fun, commercial, character-driven, genre-bending films.“
“Zach and Adam are thrilling storytellers, masters of visuals and suspense, and two of the most impressive director/producers working today,” said Sony Pictures’ Motion Picture Group President Sanford Panitch in a statement. “With projects across all the company’s film labels, we are so happy to create a home for them, and proud to have them as part of the Sony family.“
In their own statement, Lipovsky and Stein said, “We are honored to be partnering with the incredible executive team at Sony. While working with several Sony teams in the last year, we’ve been blown away by the level of creativity, thoughtfulness, and passion we felt in every conversation. We share the vision that Tom, Sanford, Peter, Louie, Kristine and Damien, Ashley and the whole Sony team have for creating theatrical event films that entertain the world.“
As for the Metal Gear Solid movie, they added, “Metal Gear Solid was nothing short of a groundbreaking cinematic masterpiece that forever revolutionized video games. We are thrilled and honored to bring Hideo Kojima’s iconic characters and unforgettable world to life.“
Jordan Vogt-Roberts
Kong: Skull Island director Jordan Vogt-Roberts was previously attached to direct the Metal Gear Solid movie, with Oscar Isaac set to star as Solid Snake. After many years with little movement, Isaac reportedly dropped the project in 2024. So it looks like Lipovsky and Stein will need a new star. That is, assuming this take on the project has better luck.
Venom Movie
In addition to the Metal Gear Solid movie, Lipovsky and Stein already have another project in the works at Sony. They’re set to direct an animated Venom movie, which does involve Tom Hardy in some capacity.
