Outcome Review: Keanu Reeves goes on a surreal journey of self discovery in Jonah Hill’s latest directorial effort

Plot: A dark comedy that centers on Reef Hawk, a beloved Hollywood star who must dive into the depths of his hidden demons after he is extorted with a mysterious video that’s sure to shatter his image and end his career. With the support of his lifelong besties, Reef embarks on a soul-searching journey to make amends with anyone he could have possibly wronged in hopes of identifying the blackmailer.

Review: A quick Google search will tell you that Keanu Reeves is often viewed as the nicest person in Hollywood. Memes have been generated about his personality and kind nature, which play a central role in Jonah Hill’s third directorial effort, Outcome. Reef Hawk, a fictional character who shares some similarities with Keanu Reeves himself, though with significant differences, is an actor on the brink of a career resurgence who must contend with a foe who hates him. Supported by Cameron Diaz, Matt Bomer, Jonah Hill, and a cast full of famous faces, some as themselves, Outcome is a blend of dark comedy and drama that gives us Keanu Reeves in an emotional performance that shows that the actor who has embodied the stoic John Wick for a decade is still more than capable of turning in powerful and layered performances.

After being out of the limelight for five years to recover from a heroin addiction, two-time Oscar winner Reef Hawk (Keanu Reeves) is preparing his comeback with the help of his lifelong friends Xander (Matt Bomer) and Kyle (Cameron Diaz). As they get his name back out there, Reef’s crisis lawyer, Ira Stitz (Jonah Hill), reveals that the actor is being blackmailed over a video whose contents are unknown. As he begins to spiral, Reef and his friends decide to go back to everyone who could potentially hate him to get ahead of the video before it’s released to the public. Unsure who could despise him enough to destroy him, Reef begins his apology tour, visiting his old manager, Red (Martin Scorsese), his mother, Dinah (Susan Lucci), and his ex-girlfriend, Savannah (Welker White). With each visit, Ira returns with more hints about what the video may hold, sending Reef on a reluctant path of self-discovery that could challenge his friendships and his sobriety.

Running a lean eighty minutes, Outcome is not what I was expecting. The trailers make it seem like Outcome is a comedy, but it contains so many more layers. Following the candid psychological work Jonah Hill chronicled in his documentary Stutz about his therapist, Dr. Phil Stutz, Outcome aims to embody the balance that everybody strives for in themselves through the brutal lens of celebrity and fame. Each stop on Reef’s journey reveals aspects of his past, where he handled things poorly or could have handled them differently, some with implications for his own psyche and others with ramifications beyond his circle. The film shows Reef regularly Googling himself to see if anyone hates him or thinks he is an asshole, showing his insecurities and the inscrutable challenge of being a famous person. Jonah Hill, who has endured his own struggles with anxiety and being put under a similar lens regarding his weight over the years, does a great job of both satirizing the fixers and crisis experts that swarm around celebrities while also using this film as a way to analyze the mental well-being we all hope to achieve.

The trailers make Outcome look funnier than it is. Make no mistake: this movie is a comedy, but much of its humor comes from awkward, surreal moments. But the movie is much more dramatic than I anticipated, with Keanu Reeves going to some emotional places we have not seen him reach as an actor in a very long time. Reeves’ performance reaches some difficult places that blend elements of his real-life journey to stardom with insight from Jonah Hill’s own experiences. The film, structured around many conversations, also delivers some powerful moments, notably from Martin Scorsese, who gives an impressive performance in his scene. Jonah Hill plays Ira as broadly comedic, especially in the conference scene with comedians Roy Wood Jr, Atsuko Okatsuka, and actor Laverne Cox. Hill then switches modes for a moment towards the end of the film, altering the mood entirely. Once the movie finally reveals why Reef is being blackmailed, it is a sad moment that impacts the various confrontations through the movie, especially those between Reef and his two best friends.

Jonah Hill’s previous directorial efforts were the coming-of-age drama mid90s and the documentary Stutz, both of which channeled a sense of humor with a journey of self-discovery. Outcome follows a similar path, blending those ideas with an insightful message about embracing your flaws and striving to be a better person. Hill co-wrote the screenplay with Ezra Woods, keeping the humor focused on spoofing Hollywood and giving famous people like Drew Barrymore the chance to play with their own image in ways funnier than some of the broader jokes in the film. The cast is full of famous actors and comedians who mostly pop in for a scene here and there, but no one is wasted. Kaia Gerber’s brief appearance is a funny moment that does not add much to the film but offers a solid laugh. Much of the film feels that way while still giving Keanu Reeves a showcase for his acting talent, which has been overshadowed by his action and stunt work in recent years.

Compared to Keanu Reeves’ last comedy, 2025’s Good Fortune, Outcome is a much more subtle story, one that still straddles the line between surrealism, satire, and spoof. There are moments in the movie that feel almost dream-like, and others that are rooted in a realism that is purely dramatic, with little humor. Jonah Hill continues to show prowess as a writer and director, improving with each film he makes. Unlike some vanity projects where a celebrity calls in every friend they can to populate their movie, Outcome feels like an indie film that the cast felt strongly about taking part in. Outcome will catch some people by surprise with a relatable story and a grounded performance from Keanu Reeves that ranks among his best in a very long time.

Outcome premieres on Apple TV on April 10th.
