The Odyssey: Tom Holland on Christopher Nolan’s “absolute masterpiece”
There are a lot of big movies to look forward to this year, including Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey, which may be the director’s most ambitious project yet. The film stars Matt Damon as Odysseus, the cunning King of Ithaca, and follows his long, brutal journey home after the Trojan War, as he battles gods, monsters, and fate itself in a desperate attempt to reunite with his wife, Penelope (Anne Hathaway) and son, Telemachus (Tom Holland). It’s safe to say that most of us are very excited about this one, and even the cast is pumped.
Tom Holland on The Odyssey
While speaking with GQ, Holland was asked about The Odyssey. “I can tell you that it is an absolute masterpiece, and I’m taking myself out of that equation,” he said. “Chris Nolan’s movie is fantastic. It’s unlike anything that I’ve ever seen before. I think when I saw the movie, I found myself asking a question that I haven’t asked about a movie for a long time, which is, ‘How did you do that?’“
Holland added that the film features some of the very best of movie magic, and that’s saying something, as the answer to “how’d they do that?” these days is usually, “CGI.”
“I think with CGI and stuff like that, we’ve become so accustomed to seeing these amazing things on screen and just kind of having the basic understanding that some very clever people and artistic people are able to do that on a computer,” Holland said. “But Chris is obviously trying to do everything as practically as possible in camera. And there were certain sequences in the movie where I’m watching it and I’m just sort of thinking like, ‘How on earth has he done that? That has to be CG,’ And then after the movie asking him, ‘That was definitely CG, right?’ And he’s like, ‘No, no, no, that’s all in camera effects. Very planned, very prepared.’“
Holland said fans will be “absolutely blown away” by the film. “It’s one of my proudest achievements as an actor and I’m so touched that Chris gave me the opportunity to be in the film,” he said. “And I really think that people are going to be floored by the film.“
Who, What, When
In addition to Damon, Holland, and Hathaway, The Odyssey stars Charlize Theron, Jon Bernthal, Robert Pattinson, Mia Goth, Zendaya, Elliot Page, John Leguizamo, Samantha Morton, Ryan Hurst, Logan Marshall-Green, Lupita Nyong’o, Josh Stewart, Benny Safdie, Corey Hawkins, and Elyes Gabel.
The Odyssey is based on an ancient Greek poem by Homer that tells the tale of Odysseus, King of Ithaca, and his journey home after the ten-year Trojan War. The trip was perilous, including encounters with the Cyclops Polyphemus, the Sirens, and the witch-goddess Circe. At home, Odysseus is presumed dead, and his wife Penelope and son Telemachus must contend with groups of unruly suitors who each want Penelope’s hand in marriage to control the kingdom.
The film is set to be released in theaters on July 17. That’s going to be a big month for Holland, as Spider-Man: Brand New Day will follow on July 31.
