Avatar: Fire and Ash: Inside Lightstorm with Stephen Lang & Oona Chaplin
Avatar: Fire and Ash, the third instalment in James Cameron’s game-changing franchise, is now on digital and hits 4K Blu-ray on May 19th. Another billion-dollar grosser, Cameron’s immersive adventures still pack a wallop with audiences, and hopefully its box office success means that we’ll be getting Cameron’s promised fourth and fifth films before long.
To mark the movie’s release on digital, Cameron’s Lightstorm Entertainment opened its doors to journalists last week, and our man Ryan Cultrera was on the scene for an amazing tour of the studio, where he got to sit for extended interviews not only with producer Rae Sanchini, but also two of the movie’s iconic stars, Stephen Lang and Oona Chaplin.
Lang, of course, stars as Colonel Miles Quaritch, who began the series as a human, but in the second and third films, after his death, was revived as an Avatar in a new Na’vi body. In the third film, Quaritch struggles with his desire to punish his enemy, Jake (Sam Worthington), while also trying to reconnect with his estranged son, Spider (Jack Champion), who views Jake as his real father.
This pushes him into an alliance with Oona Chaplin’s Varang, the psychopathic leader of the Na’vi fire clan, and the best parts of the film center around Quaritch and Varang’s growing relationship. So it was a treat to have them sit for an extended interview with Ryan, as both were happy to take a deep dive not only into their characters, but also the technical challenges of acting in mo-cap.
Ryan also got to tour the campus, and you can see everything in the video embedded above, but here are some pics too:
