By Any Means: Civil Rights-era crime thriller starring Mark Wahlberg & Yahya Abdul-Mateen lands September release
Paramount Pictures has snagged the U.S. rights to By Any Means, a crime thriller set during the Civil Rights-era starring Mark Wahlberg and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, and slated the film for a September 4 release. The idea behind this one, which is loosely based on true events, is actually pretty interesting.
By Any Means
Set in Mississippi in 1966, By Any Means follows “a volatile partnership between a hardened mafia hitman and a young Black FBI agent as they are forced into an uneasy alliance to track down those responsible for the killing of civil rights leaders — uncovering a conspiracy that tests the limits of justice, loyalty, and survival.” The film is directed by Elegance Bratton (The Inspection) and written by Sascha Penn (Power Book III: Raising Kanan).
In a statement, Bratton said, “This is a story about unlikely alliances forged under impossible circumstances — where justice is not clean, and the truth comes at a cost. I wanted to explore what it means to confront violence not just as an act, but as a system — and what it demands of those caught inside it.“
The real events involved the FBI looking into the disappearance of three missing civil rights workers, Andrew Goodman, James Chaney and Michael Schwerner. They believed they had been murdered, but were unable to locate their bodies. They turned to Gregory Scarpa, a hitman for the Colombo crime family who was also an FBI informant. Scarpa was able to use…different means of interrogation, which basically involved beating the shit out of people until they told him what he wanted to know.
The film Mississippi Burning, starring Gene Hackman and Willem Dafoe, is also loosely based on these events.
Balls Up
Wahlberg will next be seen in Balls Up, an over-the-top comedy from Peter Farrelly written by Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick. The film’s logline reads: “Marketing executives Brad (Mark Wahlberg) and Elijah (Paul Walter Hauser) go ‘balls out’ and pitch a bold full‑coverage condom sponsorship with the World Cup. After their drunken celebration in Brazil sparks a global scandal, they must outrun furious fans, criminals, and power-hungry officials to salvage their careers and make it home alive.” It’s set to be released on Prime Video on April 15.
