Tom Cruise is up to something. Something big. Earlier this morning, Tom Cruise unveiled another tease for his upcoming film Digger in the form of a monolithic shovel somewhere in the middle of nowhere. Cruise posted an image of the installation to his social media, along with coordinates to follow, presumably for those who want to see it in person. The picture shows a person (Cruise, most likely) standing in front of a massive shovel, the scoop buried in the ground partway, a gorgeous sunset (or sunrise, I’m not sure) developing on the horizon. What could Cruise be up to? Some think Digger could show up at CinemaCon next week. If that happens, we’ll let you know, as our Editor-in-Chief, Chris Bumbray, will be attending the show.
Unearthing details about Digger
Details about Digger are scarce. Beyond the film’s October 2, 2026, release date, the tagline reads, “a comedy of catastrophic proportions.” Reports also say Digger is about “the most powerful global figure who tries to convince everyone he’s a savior.”
“No, the thing that I can tell you. This is a wild comedy of catastrophic proportions,” González Iñárritu told Deadline at Cannes. “It’s insane. He makes me laugh every day. The range that I discovered working with Tom is unprecedented for me as a director. I was so fu*king impressed and happy.”
Looking back at Iñárritu’s other films
Digger is González Iñárritu’s first film since directing Netflix’s Bardo, False Chronicle of a Handful of Truths, starring Daniel Giménez Cacho. In Bardo, an acclaimed documentarian embarks on an introspective journey through surreal dreamscapes to reconcile with his past, present, and Mexican identity. Other outstanding films directed by González Iñárritu include the 2003 crime thriller 21 Grams, the 2010 psychological drama Biutiful, starring Javier Bardem; the multi-Oscar-winning drama Birdman; and 2015’s epic survival drama The Revenant, starring Leonardo DiCaprio as a frontiersman on a fur-trading expedition in the 1820s.

I wouldn’t step foot inside the U.S. right now, but if you offer me a Cloak of Invisibility, I could be convinced. The shovel looks majestic against the desert-like backdrop, though looking up at the handle would give me positional vertigo, like the Blue Whale at New York’s Museum of Natural History.
