Robert Rodriguez’ contribution to the exploitation film double feature ‘Grindhouse’ released in 2007.

A small town in Texas is plagued with a horrible outbreak, that is turning people into zombies. A group of survivors is brought together, and they must find a way to either stop the outbreak from spreading, or get out of town before it is too late for them.

Ultra violent, this film never takes itself too seriously. While I am not familiar with the type of feature films this is paying homage to, I still found this an enjoyable romp. There is plenty of action, and melodrama thrown in with plenty of strong well written characters that you want to root for, or see become zombiefied.

The same type of ‘dirty’ look used in Tarantino’s Death Proof is used here, and it is a sequel of sorts to this film too, as there are some references to that film (Jungle Julia, and Shelton’s Dr Block appearing in a blink and you’ll miss it role in DP. Here her character is expanded.

The narrative structure is stronger in this film than in Death Proof, with a more structured ‘arc’ set up with a beginning/middle/end. At 105m, the script is able to give enough exposition on the characters gradually, so it doesn’t feel clunky or forced.

There are some fun pop culture stars of the era, who play those trying to survive the outbreak, such as Black Eyed Peas Fergie, and then Lost star Naveen Andrews. Bruce Willis, while still in his prime is solid as one of the Generals who is aware of the outbreak. Once again, QT is given a cameo, and he is only okay in it.

The score, also by writer /director Rodriguez is brilliant, and captures the mood of the film brilliantly.

Not for the weak of heart, or those without a strong stomach, it is very (comically) violent.

3.5/5
