Samaritan 2: Sylvester Stallone’s superhero film is getting a sequel with the Italian Stallion reprising his role from the original
Evildoers beware! Sylvester Stallone is getting back in the ring with Amazon MGM Studios to develop Samaritan 2, a sequel to the Italian Stallion’s 2022 superhero action movie. Bragi F. Schut, who wrote the first film, returns to pen the sequel, with Stallone producing alongside his Balboa Productions partner Braden Aftergood. In addition to producing the film, Stallone reprises his role as Joe from the original.
Here’s the official synopsis for Samaritan:
Thirteen-year-old Sam Cleary (Javon “Wanna” Walton) suspects that his mysterious and reclusive neighbor Mr. Smith (Sylvester Stallone), is actually a legend hiding in plain sight. Twenty-five years ago, Granite City’s super-powered vigilante, Samaritan, was reported dead after a fiery warehouse battle with his rival, Nemesis. Most believe Samaritan perished in the fire, but some in the city, like Sam, have hope that he is still alive. With crime on the rise and the city on the brink of chaos, Sam makes it his mission to coax his neighbor out of hiding to save the city from ruin.
Samaritan premiered exclusively on Prime Video in over 240 countries and territories worldwide. The gritty and grounded superhero film was a significant hit for the streamer, remaining at the top of the charts for three consecutive weeks after launch.
If Samaritan 2 moves forward, it could pick up where the original ended, with Joe finally coming to grips with past events and his restored sense of responsibility to keep the people of Granite City safe. Other casting elements of the film remain a mystery, including if Javon “Wanna” Walton’s Sam Cleary plans to return to the series.
JoBlo’s Alex Maidy reviewed Samaritan, saying it’s a good action movie but a mediocre superhero tale. “A different kind of origin story, this movie is a nice late-career performance from Sylvester Stallone that proves how much potential he had to lead a comic book franchise had this project come about twenty years ago. Samaritan serves as a nice cap to Stallone’s loose superhero trilogy alongside Demolition Man and Judge Dredd. Prime Video is a good outlet for this since it is not epic enough to warrant a big screen push. I enjoyed my trip to Granite City and would not be opposed to exploring further adventures in this world, especially if Stallone were willing to become Samaritan one more time.”
