Barbarian video game is in the works
Writer/director Zach Cregger’s horror film Barbarian (watch it HERE) was a financial success when it was released last year, and it also received a lot of positive word-of-mouth. New Line Cinema was so impressed by it, they forked over $38 million to pick up Cregger’s mysterious new horror project, Weapons. (Beating out Jordan Peele and Universal in the bidding war.) New Line then signed a first look deal with BoulderLight Pictures, the production company behind Barbarian. They have since set up two other projects, a sci-fi thriller called Companion and a haunted house movie called Occupant, that Cregger will be producing. But while the filmmakers move on to other ideas, Barbarian does still has life in it. Our friends at Bloody Disgusting report that a Barbarian video game is now in the works!
The Barbarian video game is a collaboration between New Regency Pictures and Diversion3 Entertainment – a company that previously worked on Friday the 13th: The Game and Evil Dead: The Game. Details on the approach they’ll be taking to the Barbarian concept have not yet been revealed.
Cregger, who co-created the TV series The Whitest Kids U’Know, crafted a story for Barbarian that begins when a young woman traveling to Detroit for a job interview books a rental home. But when she arrives late at night, she discovers that the house is double booked, and a strange man is already staying there. Against her better judgement, she decides to spend the evening, but soon discovers that there’s a lot more to fear than just an unexpected house guest.
The film stars Georgina Campbell (Krypton), Bill Skarsgård (It), Justin Long (Tusk), Matthew Patrick Davis (Dwight in Shining Armor), Jaymes Butler (Spides), Kurt Braunohler (The Big Sick), J.R. Esposito (Pandora), Devina Vassileva (Memory), Kalina Stancheva (Assassin’s Bullet), Sophie Sörensen (The Tales of Toverud), Trevor Van Uden (A Drunk Scorpion Will Sting Itself to Death), and Richard Brake (31).
Tim Hesse, Executive Producer of Diversion3 Entertainment, had this to say about the Barbarian video game: “We’re very excited to work with the team at New Regency to expand on the settings, characters, and creatures of Barbarian. The film did a magnificent job of not only scaring audiences with its unexpected and horrifying twists and turns, but also in establishing strong characters thrown into terrifying situations. We look forward to exploring these themes further in the game.“
Yariv Milchan, Chairman and CEO of New Regency Pictures, added: “Expanding the Barbarian universe into gaming provides a new way to capture the horror that made the film such a success. We’re thrilled to collaborate with the incredibly talented team at Diversion3 Entertainment to immerse new and existing fans in this world.“
